  • Busy dates: Rates can be higher on busy dates (Friday to Sunday, May to September and around month-end). The booking form shows the exact hourly rate for your date. The flat first 3 hours stay the same on every date.
  • Confirmed by our Edmonton team before your move: packing and unpacking, furniture disassembly and reassembly, pianos, safes, gym equipment, hot tubs and extra stops.
  • Long-distance moves get one written flat quote per job.

How booking works: send a booking request; once our Edmonton team confirms availability, we send a payment link for the $105 deposit, and your move is booked once it is paid. Deposits are refundable if you cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours before your move; inside 48 hours a fee may apply.

How an hourly moving price is built

Local moves in Edmonton are usually quoted by the hour. Any hourly quote can be read with one formula:

Total ≈ (crew hours on site + any billable travel time) × the crew's hourly rate + truck or travel fee + materials + GST

  • Crew hours on site: the biggest variable. Ask when the clock starts and stops, and how part hours are rounded.
  • Billable travel time: some companies bill time to and from your move; others fold travel into a truck or travel fee.
  • Hourly rate: rises with the number of movers. A bigger crew costs more per hour but can finish sooner.
  • Materials: boxes, tape, mattress bags and stretch wrap may be included or charged separately.
  • Minimum hours: common on hourly quotes; two companies in the table publish 2- to 3-hour minimums.

Worked example, in hours only

A two-bedroom condo on a high floor in Wîhkwêntôwin (formerly Oliver) moves to a bungalow with a basement in Mill Woods, with a crew of three. Call their hourly rate R and any billable travel time T.

  • Loading, with the elevator booked: 2.5 hours
  • Driving across the river between addresses: 0.5 hours
  • Unloading, including the basement: 2 hours

Billable time ≈ 5 + T hours (or the minimum, if higher), so the total ≈ (5 + T) × R + truck or travel fee + materials + GST. If the elevator was never booked and loading stretches to 4 hours, the same belongings cost 1.5 extra hours of labour.

These hours are a made-up illustration, not an estimate for your move and not Men In Trucks figures.

What changes the price of an Edmonton move

Two moves of the same size can cost very different amounts because of what happens around the boxes.

What adds time to a move
FactorWhy it adds timeWhat you can do
Distance between stopsThe clock usually runs while the truck drives. River crossings and rush hour on Whitemud Drive, the Henday or Yellowhead Trail slow cross-city trips.Give both full addresses, including the quadrant suffix (for example NW or SW); ask about starting outside rush hour.
Stairs, elevators, long carriesEvery flight, every elevator wait and every extra metre from truck to door adds trips.Book the elevator; describe stairs, basements and walking distance at both ends.
How packed you arePacking loose items on the day is far slower than carrying sealed boxes.Finish packing before the crew arrives.
DisassemblyBed frames, cribs and desks need tools at both ends.Take apart the simple pieces yourself.
Specialty itemsPianos, safes and gym equipment can need extra movers or time.List them, with make, model and weight if known.
Parking distanceA truck parked far away turns every trip into a long carry.Keep the driveway clear; check building and street rules early.
Date and timeSome movers charge more at busy times; snow and short winter days slow loading.Ask whether the rate changes by date.

How parking, building rules and winter show up on an hourly bill

On an hourly quote, time spent waiting for an elevator or carrying from a distant truck is billed like any other time. Edmonton's Traffic Bylaw lets commercial vehicles stop to load and unload with hazard lights on. We plan the truck position before move day. Some Residential Parking Program zones near the U of A and NAIT allow temporary permits on request; ask City Parking Services whether one fits your move (see the City's Residential Parking Program page).

Most condo and apartment buildings set their own move rules, such as elevator bookings and time windows, so check with your property manager early and see our notes on elevator-building moves.

In winter the City declares seasonal parking bans with at least 8 hours' notice, and around the December solstice Edmonton gets about 7.5 hours of daylight (2026 sun tables). Our guide to moving in Edmonton in winter covers both.

Crew-size guide by home size

Crew size sets the hourly rate. These are general starting points, not rules; ask for a recommendation based on your inventory and access.

Hourly vs flat-rate movers in Edmonton

Neither model is automatically cheaper. The difference is who carries the risk when the day runs long.

Downsides of a flat-rate quote

  • The price may include a buffer for the mover's risk, so an easy move can cost more than it would by the hour.
  • Extra furniture, an added stop or unmentioned stairs usually reopen the price.
  • Two flat quotes only compare fairly if they describe the same job.

Men In Trucks uses both models: hourly rates within the City of Edmonton, a flat price for the first 3 hours in nearby communities (see our rate card), and one written flat quote per job for long-distance moves. Whichever model a mover uses, compare written prices for the same job.

What drives long-distance moving costs from Edmonton

Beyond the region, price usually follows what is moving and where, not a clock:

  • Inventory: the volume and weight of what you move matter most, so declutter first.
  • Distance: Calgary is about 300 km (roughly 3 hours by car on the QEII), Vancouver about 1,160 km and Toronto about 3,400 km on all-Canadian routes (Google Maps car driving time without stops, from downtown Edmonton, checked September 2026). A loaded moving truck with breaks and hours-of-service limits takes longer; your quote sets the actual schedule.
  • Access at both ends: stairs, elevators and parking at the destination count too.
  • Delivery window: get the pickup date and delivery window in writing.
  • Packing and specialty items: they add labour and care.

Federal hours-of-service rules limit daily driving for federally regulated commercial vehicles, one reason cross-country moves take days. Finding affordable movers in Edmonton without getting burned

These warning signs come from the Government of Canada and the Canadian Association of Movers. They are general and do not refer to any company named on this page.

Searching for cheap movers in Edmonton makes sense, but the lowest number on paper is not always the lowest bill on move day. Watch for:

  • A lowball quote far below the others, followed by surcharges on move day (Canadian Association of Movers).
  • A large deposit, especially in cash, or one you cannot get back. Ask whether it is refundable.
  • No written estimate. The Office of Consumer Affairs advises written estimates, not phone quotes.

The full checklist, including look-alike names and fake reviews, is on our page about movers in Edmonton.

How to compare quotes fairly

  • Get written quotes from at least three movers, as the Government of Canada suggests.
  • Check that each lists the items or volume, cost, payment terms, timing and delivery commitments.
  • Compare the likely total, not the headline rate.
  • Ask what protection for your belongings each quote includes.

If a problem comes up, raise it with the mover first, then with Alberta's consumer office, as the Government of Canada advises (see Alberta's consumer protection information).

Ways to lower your moving costs in Edmonton

General advice that works with any mover: fewer hours, a smaller crew or a smaller truck.

  1. Declutter before you ask for quotes, so the quote reflects what is really moving.
  2. Pack yourself, and finish. Sealed, labelled boxes move fastest; professional packing for just the kitchen or fragile items is a middle ground.
  3. Take apart the simple furniture the night before.
  4. Book the elevator and a loading spot. Waiting is billable time.
  5. Share an accurate inventory, so the crew and truck fit the first time.
  6. Consider labour-only help if you are driving a rental truck or filling a container: labour-only moving help covers the lifting.
  7. Stay flexible on the date and ask whether rates change on busier days.
  8. Carry small valuables yourself: documents, jewellery, medication and plants.

Edmonton moving cost questions

How much do movers cost in Edmonton per hour?

At Men In Trucks, moves within the City of Edmonton are $150/hr for 2 movers and a truck, $195/hr for 3 movers, $245/hr for 4 and $325/hr for 5 movers with 2 trucks, before GST, with a 3-hour minimum (4 hours for 4 or 5 movers) plus 1 hour of travel at the rate for your date. Rates can be higher on busy dates (Friday to Sunday, May to September and around month-end). The booking form shows the exact hourly rate for your date. Other companies’ published figures are in the market table on this page; check what each rate includes, since many add a truck or travel fee, materials or GST.

Does my moving date change the price?

It can. At Men In Trucks: Rates can be higher on busy dates (Friday to Sunday, May to September and around month-end). The booking form shows the exact hourly rate for your date. The flat first 3 hours in nearby communities stay the same on every date. Other movers set their own rules, so ask each company. On an hourly move, a winter parking ban or a shared elevator can also add time on the day.

Do you have to tip movers in Edmonton?

No. Tipping is optional, never required, and not part of your quote. If you want to thank the crew, how you do it is your choice.

Why do moving quotes in Edmonton vary so much?

Each quote rests on different assumptions: crew size, expected hours, travel or truck fees, minimum hours and materials. Some are hourly estimates and others are flat prices, and a quote given without details about stairs, elevators or parking can look low and then grow on move day. Ask every company to put its assumptions in writing so you can compare like with like.

Does Men In Trucks publish Edmonton rates?

Yes. Our Edmonton rates are at the top of this page: hourly within the City of Edmonton and a flat price for the first 3 hours in nearby communities, all before GST. Packing, heavy items and extra stops are confirmed by our Edmonton team before your move, and long-distance moves get one written flat quote per job. To reserve a date, send a booking request; for a written quote first, call (587) 329-2113 or use our Edmonton quote form.
