Safes, home gyms and other heavy items

Safe and Gym Equipment Movers in Edmonton

A safe tipping on a basement stair, a treadmill wedged in a doorway, a scrape down new hardwood: that is what heavy items do when nobody plans for them. As safe movers in Edmonton, Men In Trucks plans each safe and home gym machine from its weight, size and a few photos, then sets out the plan and the cost in a written quote before moving day.

What counts as a heavy item?

For a mover, "heavy" is about how the weight behaves as much as what the scale says. An item needs its own plan when two people cannot carry it the ordinary way, when its weight sits high or at one end, or when part of it must come off before it fits through a door. Heavy item movers in Edmonton plan these pieces separately from the boxes, whether they move alone or with any of our Edmonton moving services.

Safes

Gun safes, fire-resistant document safes and home safes: a lot of weight in a small box, with little to grip.

Cardio machines

Treadmills, ellipticals, exercise bikes and rowers: long, awkward and often much heavier at one end.

Strength equipment

Squat and power racks, cable machines, benches, plates and dumbbells: many parts and a surprising total weight.

Pianos

Pianos need different methods and have their own page: moving a piano in Edmonton.

Safe movers in Edmonton: getting a safe ready

Most of a safe move happens before the truck arrives. On the day, a proper safe move uses a heavy-duty dolly or cart suited to the load, straps, and enough people to hold it steady on every step.

Before anything else: Empty the safe first; firearms, ammunition, cash and valuables travel with you. Send make, model, weight and photos for a quote.

  • Bolted down? If it is bolted down, tell us. It must be unbolted before moving day.
  • Close it up. Remove or secure loose shelves, then lock the door so it cannot swing open when the safe is tilted.
  • Keep the codes with you. Carry the combination, keys and any backup code yourself; never tape them to the safe.
  • Find the weight. Check the maker's label, the manual or the manufacturer's website.
  • Plan where it lands. For a very heavy safe on an upper floor, ask your builder or building manager whether the floor suits the weight.

Gun safes

Firearms and ammunition come out and travel with you, along with the keys and combination. Send the safe's height, weight and which way the door swings, and tell us if it is bolted to the floor or a wall.

Gym equipment movers in Edmonton: what comes apart

Home gym equipment is built to stay put: long, top-heavy or threaded with cables. Moving it usually means partial disassembly, just enough to protect each machine and clear the route. Think of it as furniture assembly and disassembly with more weight and more hardware.

Home gym equipment: what a move usually involves
EquipmentWhat a proper move usually involvesPhotograph or note
TreadmillA folding deck is folded and locked. A non-folding treadmill is long and heavy at the motor end, so turns and stairs need a plan.Model label, overall length, whether the deck folds
EllipticalOften one piece; on some models the arms, pedals or console come off to clear a doorway.Model label, narrowest doorway on the route
Exercise bike or rowerUsually one piece. Many rowers fold or separate in two.Model, and whether it folds
Squat or power rackPlates and bars come off first, then the rack is unbolted into uprights and cross-members and rebuilt.Every bolt and J-hook. If the rack is anchored to the floor, tell us; it must be unanchored before moving day.
Cable machine or home gymThe weight stack is removed or secured, cables stay threaded where possible and the selector pin is bagged with the hardware.Cable routing at every pulley, before anything is loosened
Plates and dumbbellsPacked in small loads one person can lift, never one huge box.Rough total weight

Models vary: send the make and model and your written quote will say what comes apart.

After a cold-weather move, let treadmill and bike consoles warm to room temperature before plugging them in (see the winter moving guide).

Got the model number and a few photos? That is most of what we need.

Stairs, basements, elevators and floors

With heavy items, the route matters more than the distance.

Stairs and basements

Count the steps, note any turn or landing, and measure the narrowest width and the headroom, especially under a basement bulkhead, which can decide whether a tall safe or rack stays upright. In winter, clear snow and ice from the whole path to the truck the day before.

Condos and apartment buildings

If the safe or machine has to ride an elevator, ask your property manager for the elevator's weight capacity and its door and car dimensions, and whether a heavy item needs a booking or pads. Most condo and apartment buildings set their own move rules (elevator bookings, time windows, deposits or fees) through bylaws or building rules. Send those details with your quote request and we will confirm in writing whether the item rides the elevator or takes the stairs.

Floors, walls and the carry to the truck

A careful heavy-item move never drags anything: the item stays wrapped and rolls on a dolly or cart where it can, over runners or board, with padding on door frames and banister corners. Mention new hardwood, tile or fresh paint in your quote request and your written quote will set out how it will be protected.

Edmonton's Traffic Bylaw lets commercial vehicles stop to load and unload with hazard lights on. We plan the truck position before move day. With a safe, every metre of carry counts.

What to send for a heavy-item quote

A tape measure and a phone camera give us most of what we need. Send:

  • The item's make, model, height, width and depth
  • Its weight, from the label, the manual or the maker's website. Tell us the weight and we will confirm the plan in writing.
  • Photos of the item, its label and the route at both ends: entrances, steps, turns and doorways
  • Both addresses, and the floor at each end (basement, main, garage or upper)
  • Whether it is bolted down or needs taking apart
  • Elevator and parking details for any condo or apartment
  • Whether it moves alone or with a bigger move, such as moving a family home

Already renting a truck and only need hands for the heavy pieces? See labour-only moving help, where you drive the rental truck. Otherwise, request your written quote and keep your photos handy.

Safe and home gym moving questions

What details do you need to quote a safe move?

Send the make, model, weight and outside dimensions of the safe, plus photos of the safe and of the route at both ends. Tell us which floor it is on now, where it is going, how many steps are involved and whether it is bolted down. Empty the safe first; firearms, ammunition, cash and valuables travel with you. Your written quote then sets out the plan and the cost.

Can you move a safe into a basement?

It depends on the safe and the stairs: a straight flight with room at both ends is a different job from a narrow stair that turns at a landing or ends under a low bulkhead. Send the step count, the narrowest width, the headroom and photos of the route. Tell us the safe's weight and we will confirm in writing whether and how it can go down.

Do I need to take apart my home gym before the move?

Not necessarily, but get it ready: take off the plates, dumbbells, bands and attachments, and keep the treadmill safety key with you. If you take a machine apart yourself, photograph each step and bag and label the bolts. Otherwise, tell us the make and model and we will confirm in writing which parts come apart and who handles them.

Can you move a treadmill or squat rack on its own, without a full move?

Yes. Tell us what the item is, where it is now and where it is going, and your written quote will show the cost. That includes a treadmill going from one home to another or a rack going from the garage to the basement.
