What moving labour in Edmonton covers, and what it does not

Labour-only movers supply the people and the loading method; you supply the vehicle.

Help loading your rental truck or container

Whether you rented a truck or ordered a container to your driveway, loading and unloading help in Edmonton is booked the same way. You book one company, with one written quote and one point of contact before move day.

  1. Tell us the vehicle: the truck size, or the container type and length, and where it will park.
  2. Tell us the job: loading, unloading or both, the addresses, stairs or elevators, and any heavy pieces.
  3. Get your written quote with the crew size and tasks.
  4. On the day, the crew loads and ties off section by section. You lock up, then drive the truck or hand the container back to its company.

Six jobs where labour-only help fits

A rental truck you drive

Loading, unloading or both. Driving out of province? Book loading here and arrange help at the other end.

A portable container

The container company delivers and hauls it; the crew loads it evenly to help keep the load from shifting in transit.

A SeaCan

Tell us its length, where it sits and which way the doors face.

A self-storage unit you rent

Filling your unit from home, or emptying it into your truck. Access hours and rules are yours to check.

Rearranging at home

A sectional to the basement, or rooms cleared for new flooring. For heavy pieces, see moving a safe or home gym.

A container arriving from another province

Moving to Edmonton with a container or rental truck? A local Edmonton crew can unload it at your new home.

Businesses can book loading help for vans and containers too; for a full relocation, see our page on moving your business.

Container on the street? Check the permit first

If a portable container or SeaCan will sit on a City of Edmonton road, sidewalk or boulevard, the City generally requires an On-Street Construction and Maintenance (OSCAM) permit. Check the City's road right-of-way page and apply well ahead.

The City's form for bins, PODs and SeaCans on the road also asks for a servicing address or titled lot, and the unit must be retro-reflective. In St. Albert, Strathcona County and other nearby municipalities, the rules are set by that municipality, so check with them.

For a rental truck, pick a legal parking spot near the door. Most condo and apartment buildings set their own move rules, such as elevator bookings, time windows, deposits or fees, so check with your property manager early. In winter, check for a parking ban; see the winter moving guide.

How a well-loaded truck or container is packed

General guidance only; the crew adapts it to your vehicle on the day.

  1. Heaviest first, at the front: appliances and dressers against the wall nearest the cab, or the back wall of a container.
  2. Balance side to side, so the truck stays steady and the container stable when moved.
  3. Long, flat pieces on edge: mattresses, headboards and tabletops upright along the side walls.
  4. Tiers, floor to ceiling: heavy boxes low, lighter ones above, fragile cartons on top.
  5. Tie off and fill gaps: a strap across each finished tier, with cushions or bagged bedding in the holes, helps keep the load from shifting.
  6. Last on, first off: beds and first-night boxes go in last.

Check the rental or container company's weight limits and banned items first.

Labour-only or a full-service move?

What shapes a labour-only quote

  • The crew size and the hours on site
  • Stairs, elevators and the carry to the vehicle
  • How much is going, disassembly, and heavy pieces such as safes
  • Whether the vehicle is on site and open when the crew arrives

Before the crew arrives: a prep checklist

  • Pick up the truck early, or confirm the container's delivery date and spot.
  • Book the elevator and loading area if your building has them.
  • Pack, tape and label every box.
  • Empty and defrost the fridge; have gas or water lines disconnected by a qualified person.
  • Clear the paths; in winter, shovel and salt walkways and steps.
  • Keep documents, medication, keys and valuables with you, not in the load.
  • Mark what stays; measure big pieces against the door.
  • Have the lock and rental paperwork ready, and keep children and pets clear of the ramp.

Moving labour questions

What is labour-only moving?

Labour-only moving means you supply the vehicle and we supply the people. A local Edmonton crew carries, loads, unloads or rearranges your belongings, while you rent, drive and return the truck or book the container. Your written quote lists the crew, the tasks and the addresses before move day.

Can you load a portable storage container or SeaCan?

Yes. Tell us the container type and length, where it will sit and what is going in, and your written quote will confirm the crew and time. The crew loads it tightly and evenly to help keep the load from shifting once the unit is moved. Check the container company's weight limits and banned items first.

Do I need a permit to put a container on an Edmonton street?

If the container will sit on a City of Edmonton road, sidewalk or boulevard, the City generally requires an On-Street Construction and Maintenance (OSCAM) permit, so check the City's road right-of-way page and apply well ahead. Ask the container company what it arranges and what you must apply for yourself. Outside Edmonton, the rules are set by each municipality; check with them.

Is hiring moving labour worth it?

It often is when the transport is sorted but the lifting is not: a truck you plan to drive, a container arriving at your new Edmonton home, or heavy furniture on stairs. Movers bring the technique and a loading method that helps protect your belongings and uses the space you are paying for. If you would rather not drive or arrange permits, compare it with a full-service quote.
