Condos, high-rises and walk-ups

Apartment and Condo Movers in Edmonton

An apartment move is decided by the building as much as by the furniture: the elevator booking, where the truck can stop, and how many flights of stairs sit between your door and the street. When you hire apartment movers in Edmonton, settle those details first. Men In Trucks starts there, with the details confirmed in writing before anything is booked.

What apartment movers in Edmonton sort out first

In Edmonton, 94,750 homes (24% of the city's occupied dwellings) are condominiums, and 36% of households rent (Statistics Canada, 2021 Census). For those moves, most problems are predictable, and rarely about the furniture itself.

Elevator time

Your building decides when you get the elevator and for how long. The rest of the day is planned around that window.

Truck position

Dock, front drive, lane or street. The walk from truck to elevator can be the longest carry of the day.

Stairs and turns

Walk-ups and tight corridor corners decide whether bulky pieces travel whole or come apart first.

Elevator bookings and condo move rules

Most condo and apartment buildings set their own move rules (elevator bookings, time windows, deposits or fees) through bylaws or building rules. Check with your property manager early.

In a condo, those rules come from the corporation under Alberta's Condominium Property Act, and the bylaws bind owners and tenants alike (CMHC Alberta condo fact sheet). Move fees and deposits are set by each corporation, so ask for the current amount in writing.

Booking the elevator

  • Book as soon as your date is firm, and ask how long the booking lasts.
  • Ask whether the building hangs protective elevator pads or needs them requested ahead.
  • Book the new building's elevator too, in a window that allows for the drive between.

Paperwork your building may ask for

Some buildings want documents from the moving company before confirming a booking. Send us the move package and ask us about your building's paperwork; we will tell you in writing what we can provide.

Condo, rental or rented condo: who sets the rules

You own a condo

The corporation's bylaws and rules govern move times, elevator use and any deposit or fee. Ask the property manager for the current version.

You rent in an apartment building

Your landlord or property manager sets move hours and elevator bookings. You also have an inspection and your deposit to plan for; see the renter move-out essentials.

You rent a condo unit

Two sets of rules apply: your landlord's and the condo corporation's. Ask your landlord who books the elevator.

High-rise moves downtown and in Wîhkwêntôwin

About 7% of Edmonton homes are in buildings of five storeys or more (Statistics Canada, 2021 Census). In towers downtown and in Wîhkwêntôwin (formerly Oliver), one of the city's most populous neighbourhoods, a high-rise move runs on the building's clock. Before moving day, find out:

  • Dock or front door. Which entrance movers use, and whether the loading dock is booked separately from the elevator.
  • Parkade clearance. Ask whether a moving truck fits under the parkade clearance; if not, plan the carry from the loading dock or front drive.
  • Sign-in. Give the concierge or security desk your date, window and unit number.
  • Long corridors. Floor, wall and elevator protection matters more on a long carry.

Boxes packed and labelled before the elevator window opens keep that time for loading. To hand the job over, add packing and unpacking help to your quote.

Walk-up apartments: when the stairs set the pace

In a walk-up, everything travels by stairwell, so a third-floor walk-up takes longer than a ground-floor suite with the same furniture. Tell us the flights, landing widths and tight turns, and send a stairwell photo if you can.

Where the moving truck parks

Edmonton's Traffic Bylaw lets commercial vehicles stop to load and unload with hazard lights on. We plan the truck position before move day. That does not override posted no-stopping zones, Residential Parking Program signs or a declared parking ban, when lanes are closed to parking too. A loading dock, front drive or private lot is the building's call, so pass on what management tells you; streets and lanes follow City rules.

Some Residential Parking Program zones near the U of A and NAIT allow temporary permits on request; ask City Parking Services whether one fits your move. The zones are listed on the City's Residential Parking Program page.

In winter, a declared ban can change where a truck may stop on your street; see planning around parking bans.

Same-building and multi-stop moves

Moving within your building

A unit-to-unit move skips the drive, not the planning: one elevator window has to cover loading and unloading, and the hallways still need protecting.

  • Ask management whether one elevator booking covers both units.
  • Treat your building storage locker and parking stall as extra stops.
  • Get the new unit's keys or fob before the booking starts.

More than one stop

Dropping a dresser at a relative's condo, then collecting boxes from a friend's place? List every address in order when you request your quote; each stop adds time and sometimes another elevator booking.

Student moves around campus

Student moves around the U of A tend to cluster at term boundaries: late April after winter exams, and late August into early September.

  • Fall 2026 classes run September 1 to December 8, 2026.
  • Winter 2027 classes run January 4 to April 9, 2027, with final exams after that.

Class dates are from the U of A academic calendar. U of A spring and summer 2026 residence contracts end at noon on set dates (June 26 or July 31), and late move-outs are penalized, so check your own residence contract. MacEwan University and NAIT publish their own calendars. For student moves in Edmonton with only a few pieces, see small moves and furniture pickups.

Renting? Alberta move-out essentials

For a monthly tenancy, give notice in writing before the start of the rental month, then book movers for the last days of that month. The rules that matter most at move-out:

Deposit plus interest within 10 days of giving up possession, or the balance and a final statement within 30 days if there are deductions. Move-in and move-out inspection reports are mandatory. Notice depends on tenancy type.

Book the move-out inspection for after the last load leaves, so the empty unit is what gets inspected.

Apartment and condo moving questions

Do I need to book the elevator for a condo move in Edmonton?

Usually, yes. Most condo and apartment buildings set their own move rules (elevator bookings, time windows, deposits or fees) through bylaws or building rules, and condo bylaws bind tenants as well as owners. Book as soon as your date is firm, ask whether the building hangs elevator pads, and book the elevator at your new building for a window that lines up.

Where will the moving truck park at my apartment building?

It depends on the building. Some have a loading dock or a front drive, so ask your property manager and pass their instructions to us. Edmonton's Traffic Bylaw lets commercial vehicles stop to load and unload with hazard lights on. We plan the truck position before move day. Posted no-stopping zones, Residential Parking Program signs and winter parking bans still apply.

Can you move a third-floor walk-up without an elevator?

Yes. Stairs add carrying time, so tell us the floor, the number of flights and any tight turns when you ask for a quote, and send a stairwell photo if you can. Bulky pieces such as bed frames may need to come apart first, and a piano or safe on stairs is planned separately.

What does Alberta require when I move out of a rental?

Notice depends on tenancy type: a tenant on a monthly periodic tenancy gives one full tenancy month of notice in writing, and a fixed-term tenancy ends on its stated date. Move-in and move-out inspection reports are mandatory. The deposit plus interest comes back within 10 days of giving up possession, or the balance and a final statement within 30 days if there are deductions. This is general information from the Government of Alberta, not legal advice.

Can you move us within the same building?

Yes. Give us both unit numbers and floors, anything coming from your building's storage locker or parking stall, and the elevator window management has approved. Your written quote will confirm whether a truck is needed at all.

Planning an apartment or condo move?
