Edmonton to Calgary movers: how the move works

Men In Trucks has moved families and businesses since 2010 in Ottawa and has now launched in Edmonton with local crews. A move down the QEII runs in six steps:

  1. Tell us about the move. Send both addresses, your dates and a room-by-room list, including the basement and garage. Photos and notes on stairs, elevators and parking help. The quickest way is to request your written quote online.
  2. Get one written flat quote. It states the pickup date and the delivery window. Remembered the garage shelving or the deep freeze after quoting? Tell us before loading day and we will confirm any change to your quote in writing.
  3. Book access at both ends. Reserve elevators and loading areas in Edmonton and in Calgary, and confirm each building's move-window rules.
  4. Loading day in Edmonton. Local Edmonton crews load your belongings for the highway. Tell us about fragile or high-value pieces and we will confirm in writing how they will be protected. Edmonton's Traffic Bylaw lets commercial vehicles stop to load and unload with hazard lights on. We plan the truck position before move day.
  5. The QEII run. Your belongings head south on Highway 2. If you drive down separately, keep your phone on.
  6. Delivery in Calgary. Your written quote states the delivery window, so have someone at the Calgary address for it. Tick items off the numbered list as they come off the truck and note any damage in writing, with photos, as soon as possible.

A QEII move is priced as one written flat quote, not by the hour, the same way Men In Trucks prices all long-distance moves from Edmonton: your load, the stairs or elevators at each end, the distance of about 300 km and your delivery window set the number. For the factors behind any mover's number, see how moving prices are built in Edmonton.

Know your dates? Send your addresses and what is moving, and we will put the plan, the price and the delivery window in writing.

The QEII, seasons and timing

At car speed the QEII run takes roughly three hours; a loaded truck with breaks takes longer, so plan your own drive with slack rather than racing the truck. Check 511 Alberta for closures and conditions before you leave.

Winter. At the Edmonton International Airport weather station, at least 1 cm of snow covers the ground on about 141 days a year, and most freezing-rain days fall between November and February (Environment and Climate Change Canada 1981–2010 normals). Check 511 Alberta again on the morning of the move, and leave room between your move-out, the drive and any Calgary possession deadline so one storm cannot upset all three. The winter moving guide covers parking bans, cold-sensitive items and short daylight.

Month-end. Both cities fall under Alberta's Residential Tenancies Act: a monthly tenant gives one tenancy month of notice, while a fixed-term lease ends on its stated date. Give notice in writing before the start of the rental month, then book movers for the last days of that month (Government of Alberta; general information, not legal advice). Some movers charge more at busy times such as weekends or month-end, so ask whether your date changes the price. Buying? Confirm what time you get the keys on possession day.

Packing and loading for a 300 km trip

A move across town can tolerate a few loose items. About 300 km of highway cannot, so everything should be boxed, wrapped or secured.

  • Close every box. Tape tops and bottoms, keep books in small boxes and fill gaps with paper.
  • Label for the new floor plan. Write the Calgary room name on two sides, number boxes against an inventory list, then tape the same room names to each door in Calgary.
  • Take apart what travels flat. Bed frames, table legs and shelving; tape bagged hardware to each piece.
  • Prepare appliances. Empty and defrost the fridge and freezer the day before, so meltwater does not soak the boxes packed around them on the highway.
  • Keep a ride-with-you bin. Documents, medication, keys, chargers and the first night's bedding go in your car.
  • Leave dangerous goods out. Most movers won't carry flammables, propane, paint, fuel, ammunition or firearms, so move these yourself.

A well-built highway load has furniture wrapped in blankets or pads, heavy pieces low and the load secured in sections so nothing slides. Short on time? Ask about professional packing, boxes and packing materials when you request your quote; we'll confirm in writing what's supplied.

Calgary arrival checklist

Work through this a week or two before the move.

  • Book the elevator. Most condo and apartment buildings set their own move rules (elevator bookings, time windows, deposits or fees) through bylaws or building rules. Check with your property manager early. Alberta's condominium law applies in Calgary too, and tenants are bound by condo bylaws.
  • Check where the truck can stop. Street parking is set by the City of Calgary and the signs on your street, not by Edmonton's rules. Tell us about restrictions or back-lane access before move day.
  • Measure tight spots. Compare doorways, stair turns and elevator doors with your sofa, fridge and mattress.
  • Do the inspection if you rent. Move-in inspection reports are mandatory in Alberta; walk through with your landlord before furniture goes in.
  • Sort keys, fobs and codes for whoever meets the truck, and keep that person's phone on during the delivery window.

Edmonton to Calgary moving questions

How far is Calgary from Edmonton by road?

About 300 km from downtown Edmonton to Calgary, or roughly 3 hours by car without stops, mostly on Highway 2 (the QEII), according to Google Maps (checked September 2026). Red Deer is close to the halfway point. A loaded moving truck with breaks takes longer than a car, so your written quote sets the actual schedule.

When will my things arrive in Calgary?

Delivery timing depends on the size of your load, access at both ends and the date you book. Your written quote states the pickup date and the delivery window, so you know when someone needs to be at the Calgary address before you commit.

Is it worth hiring movers for a 300 km move?

It depends on how much you are moving and who will do the lifting. Doing it yourself means loading in Edmonton, driving a loaded rental truck about 300 km, unloading in Calgary and returning the truck. For a few pieces that can make sense; for a full home, get a written quote and compare the real cost and effort of both options.

Can you also move us from Calgary to Edmonton?

Tell us your Calgary origin address, your Edmonton delivery address and what is moving, and we will quote it. Your written quote confirms whether we can take the job, the pickup date and the delivery window before you book anything.
