Urgent moves handled calmly and professionally

Moving plans can change in a heartbeat. A landlord hands you short notice, a closing date shifts, a roommate bails, or a job relocation starts Monday — and suddenly you need movers in Ottawa today or tomorrow, not next week.

Men In Trucks has built its last-minute moving service around exactly these situations. We keep slots open for same-day and next-day requests, staff crews on standby, and run a live dispatch line so you can reach a real person, confirm availability, and lock in a truck within minutes. No drama, no inflated “emergency” fees — just a dependable crew that shows up when you need them most.

FAQ

Urgent questions, straight answers

Can you move me today?
Most days, yes. We hold back a portion of our daily capacity specifically for same-day bookings. Availability depends on how full the schedule is and where you’re located — call 613-800-0917 and we’ll confirm in minutes.
How fast can you arrive?
Typical same-day arrival windows are 2–4 hours from the time of booking, though we regularly dispatch sooner when crews are already out and nearby. Book a next-day slot and you’ll usually get a guaranteed arrival window within 30 minutes.
Do last-minute moves cost more?
No — our hourly rates for last-minute bookings are the same as our standard rates. You pay the regular $150/hr (2 movers), $195/hr (3 movers), or $245/hr (4 movers) plus a one-hour travel fee. No surge pricing, no emergency surcharges. The only thing that changes is how quickly we can be at your door.
What if my move spills past today?
No problem. We can split a move across two days, store your items overnight in our secure facility, or extend the crew’s hours if they’re still fresh. Everything is arranged with you on-site — no surprises.
Do I need to be packed when you arrive?
Ideally yes, but we get it — last-minute means last-minute. If you need packing help, tell dispatch when you book and we’ll roll in with materials and extra hands. Packing and moving happen back-to-back with one crew.
What areas do you cover for same-day moves?
All of Ottawa and surrounding areas — including Kanata, Barrhaven, Orléans, Nepean, Gloucester, and Gatineau. For longer hauls (Montreal, Toronto, etc.) we can often start the same day but completion timing depends on distance.
How do I pay on a rush booking?
Credit card, debit, Interac e-transfer, or cash — whatever’s easiest. Payment is collected at the end of the move once the final hours are tallied. No deposits required for most same-day jobs.

Same-day arrival window, expedite fees, and the 5-step rush booking

The industry calls anything booked under one week of notice a “last-minute” move. We carve it tighter: same-day means the truck rolls within 2-4 hours of your call. Here’s exactly how the windows, the fees, and the no-show policy work — so you can pull the trigger with full information.

2-4 hrTypical same-day arrival
1 hrQuote turnaround
$150Expedite fee (2-3 hr arrival)
NoneCancel 24+ hr ahead

5 more questions rush callers ask first

What exactly triggers the expedite fee, and how is it calculated?

The expedite fee kicks in for two specific situations. First: arrival under 3 hours from booking confirmation, because we’re pulling crew off another route. Second: bookings outside our 8am-5pm window — pre-7am loads, post-7pm loads, and overnight emergency calls. The fee is a flat 150 CAD layered on top of the regular hourly rate, not a percentage. It’s quoted in writing before deposit. Standard same-day calls in the 2-4 hour window during business hours don’t carry it.

Can I get a partial-crew booking — just two movers and one truck — to keep the cost lower?

Yes. The default same-day crew is three plus one truck because most rush calls are full-apartment loads, but a two-mover crew is bookable for studio loads, single-room moves, single-item heavy items (a piano, a fridge), and emergency junk pulls. The hourly rate is lower (we publish 140 CAD/hr for a 2-crew vs higher for a 3-crew on the pricing page). Two-mover crews are not available for buildings with elevator booking windows under 90 minutes — we’d just miss the window.

What’s the actual cancellation policy for a same-day or rush booking?

Same-day and rush bookings have a different policy than standard bookings because we hold the crew off another job. Cancel 4 or more hours before the arrival window: the 100 CAD deposit is fully refundable. Cancel inside 4 hours: deposit is non-refundable but applied as credit to a future booking within 90 days. No-show with no contact: deposit forfeit, no credit. We send an SMS arrival window 60 minutes before; reply with “stop” and we treat that as an in-window cancellation.

Do you cover Kanata, Orleans, Stittsville, and Barrhaven the same way as the urban core for same-day?

Same-day coverage extends to all four suburbs but the arrival window stretches to 3-5 hours instead of 2-4. The reason is staging — the truck and crew need to clear an existing route before deadheading out to the suburbs. Suburb same-day is most reliable Tuesday through Thursday; on Friday and Monday month-end, we book 1-2 days out. If you’re in Kanata or Orleans and need a same-day pickup, call before 11am for the best chance of a 3-hour window.

What’s the latest you’ll dispatch a same-day move?

The cutoff is 5pm on a regular weekday — that’s the latest we’ll start a load and still finish before our crew runs out of legal driving hours. After 5pm we move to “tonight” tier (post-7pm start, expedite fee applies, must be a 2-hour-or-less single-stop load). After 10pm we don’t dispatch new bookings until 6am the next morning unless it’s a building-eviction emergency or a hospital-discharge call routed through our senior-move line.

Book a same-day move in 5 minutes

  1. Step 1 (60 sec). Call dispatch and read off: pickup address, drop address, room count, biggest 3 items, and whether either end has stairs or elevator booking required.
  2. Step 2 (90 sec). Get the written quote by SMS. It includes hourly rate, minimum hours, expedite fee if any, and the arrival window range.
  3. Step 3 (60 sec). Pay the 100 CAD deposit through the SMS link. Crew is locked-in once payment posts (usually 30 seconds).
  4. Step 4 (90 sec). Receive the crew lead’s direct phone number and the arrival-window SMS. Forward both to anyone meeting the truck on the other end.
  5. Step 5 (final). 60 minutes before arrival you’ll get a “we’re rolling” SMS with the crew lead’s GPS link. Reply “all good” or call dispatch to flag any access changes.
