Why Men In Trucks

Why hourly is the fairest way to pay for an Ottawa move

Flat rates get quoted on assumption. Hourly bills on reality. For most Ottawa local moves — studio through 3-bedroom — hourly pricing is consistently cheaper AND more honest.

You pay for the actual work

Timer starts when movers arrive at pickup, stops when the last box is placed at destination. Slow elevator? We absorb that. Packed faster? You save.

No inflated flat-rate padding

Flat-rate quotes build in 25-40% safety buffer. Most Ottawa 2-bedroom moves finish in 4-5 hours — typical cost $560-$900 all-in.

Same rate for every hour

No surge pricing on weekends, no evening surcharge, no emergency fees. $150/hr is $150/hr, Monday or Saturday.

Transparent pricing

Transparent hourly rates — what you actually pay

All rates include a fully-equipped truck, blankets, dollies, straps and wrap. A one-hour travel fee covers the drive from our depot to your pickup. $100 deposit via Square locks your crew.

3 Movers + Truck

2-bedroom apartments, small houses. Fastest per-dollar option.

Recent Ottawa hourly bookings — real times, real totals

Three recent invoices from Ottawa hourly-rate moves, with actual crew size, hours, and total cost.

Westboro studio, 2 movers

Ground-floor walk-up to Vanier duplex. 2.5 hours billed + 1-hour travel fee. Total: $490.

Glebe 1-bedroom, 3 movers

Crew sizing

Which crew size is right for your move?

More movers = higher hourly rate, but fewer total hours. For most Ottawa moves 3 movers is the sweet spot — you pay $40 more per hour but finish in roughly 2/3 the time.

Studio — 2 movers

2-3 hours typical. Total: $420-$580. Ideal under 500 sq ft with reasonable access.

1-Bedroom — 2 movers

3-4 hours typical. Total: $560-$760. Best without elevators past 1st floor.

2-Bedroom — 3 movers

4-5 hours typical. Total: $900-$1,100. Most common Ottawa booking.

2-Bedroom house — 3 movers

5-6 hours typical. Total: $1,080-$1,280. Basement and garage usually push to higher end.

3-Bedroom house — 4 movers

6-8 hours typical. Total: $1,540-$1,940. 4 movers work in parallel on rooms.

4+ Bedroom — 4 movers + 2 trucks

7-10 hours typical. Call dispatch for custom quote. We might run two trucks to compress.

FAQ

Hourly pricing FAQ

Is there a minimum charge?

Yes — a 2-hour minimum applies to all hourly bookings. This covers crew commitment and travel setup. Plus a one-hour travel fee which covers the drive from depot to your pickup address.

When does the hourly clock start and stop?

Clock starts when the crew arrives at your pickup address and begins work. Clock stops when the last item is placed at destination. No clock-running during breaks.

Are weekends or evenings more expensive?

No. Our hourly rate is identical Monday through Sunday, any time of day we run service. End-of-month weekends are our busiest slot — book early, but the rate does not change.

Do you bill in 15-minute or 30-minute increments?

After the 2-hour minimum we bill in 15-minute increments. You will not be charged a full hour for 10 extra minutes.

What if the crew finishes early — do I still pay 2 hours?

Yes, the 2-hour minimum holds even on quick jobs. For most customers this is never an issue as the actual work takes longer.

Can I get a flat-rate instead?

For local Ottawa moves we default to hourly because it is nearly always cheaper. For long-distance moves (over 50km) we offer binding flat-rate quotes — those are worth locking in because drive time is predictable.

What is included in the hourly rate?

Professional crew, 26-foot truck, fuel, moving blankets, straps, dollies, stretch wrap, paper pads, basic floor protection, and basic liability coverage. Boxes are extra if you need them.

What is the cost of a typical Ottawa 1-bedroom move?

Most Ottawa 1-bedroom moves run $560-$760 with 2 movers over 3-4 hours. Add $120-$150 if you have stairs or complex elevator logistics.

Do you accept credit card or e-transfer at the end of the move?

Yes — Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Interac e-transfer, and cash are all accepted. The $100 Square deposit is applied to the final invoice, balance due on completion.

When Hourly Billing Beats Flat-Rate Quotes

Most Ottawa moves run faster on hourly billing than on a flat-rate quote, and the math is usually obvious before the truck arrives. A flat-rate quote has to assume the worst possible day, which means the moving company adds a buffer for stairs, traffic, parking permits, last-minute packing, and difficult access. With our hourly rate, you only pay for the time you actually use. Two movers and a 26-foot truck cost $150 per hour, three movers cost $195 per hour, and four movers cost $245 per hour. The 3-hour minimum protects our crew on short jobs; on a 6-hour move with three movers and a 30-minute coffee break, you pay for 5.5 hours of actual labour and not a padded 8-hour flat rate.

Hourly billing is the right call when (a) the move is one to four rooms inside Ottawa or Gatineau, (b) you can be packed and ready when we arrive, (c) the elevator is booked or the building has direct truck access, or (d) you want the option to add small disassembly tasks without a change-order conversation. Hourly is the wrong call when the route is long-distance (Ottawa-Toronto, Ottawa-Halifax, Ottawa-Calgary), when piano or antique handling needs a fixed scope, or when a corporate procurement team requires a not-to-exceed price up front. For those scenarios we issue a flat quote against a defined inventory.

Our travel fee is one billable hour for moves inside 30 km of Ottawa City Hall, 1.5 hours for Gatineau and other moves just outside Ottawa proper, and 2 hours for the 31-60 km ring (Carleton Place, Kemptville, Russell). Anything beyond 60 km is quoted as a custom long-distance rate, not hourly. The travel fee covers driving from our warehouse to your origin and back from your destination at the end of the day. We invoice in 15-minute increments after the 3-hour minimum, so a 4-hour-and-12-minute job bills at 4.25 hours, not 5.

Hourly Movers Ottawa — Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a minimum charge for hourly moves?

Yes. We bill a 3-hour minimum on every hourly move regardless of how fast the crew finishes. This protects the movers’ day rate when they decline other work to hold your slot. After the 3-hour minimum, we bill in 15-minute increments based on real on-the-clock time.

When does the clock start and stop?

The on-site clock starts when the crew arrives at your origin address and stops when the truck is unloaded and walked through at the destination. The travel fee (1, 1.5, or 2 hours depending on zone) is billed separately and covers the warehouse-to-origin and destination-to-warehouse drive. We do not start the clock when the truck leaves our warehouse.

Can I pause the clock for a coffee break or lunch?

Short breaks (under 15 minutes) are not deducted because the truck is still on-site and the dock is held. If the crew takes a 30-minute or longer lunch and you want it deducted, tell the crew lead before they break and we will pause the clock; otherwise meal breaks are paid time per Ontario labour standards.

What if the move takes less than 3 hours?

You still pay the 3-hour minimum plus the travel fee. If a 2-mover crew finishes a 1-bedroom apartment in 2 hours and 15 minutes, the bill is $150 × 3 + travel — total $600 plus tax for a Tier-1 Ottawa move. We will not pad the time to fill the minimum; we leave once the work is done.

Do you charge extra for travel between origin and destination?

Origin-to-destination drive time is included in the on-site hourly clock — when the truck is moving from your old place to your new place, you are paying $150, $195, or $245 per hour for the crew on the truck. The separate travel fee covers only the warehouse-bookend portions. Long stretches of driving between two distant suburbs (for example Stittsville to Orleans, ~45 minutes) bill at the on-site hourly rate during the drive.

Can I switch from hourly to flat-rate after I see the inventory?

Yes — and we recommend it for moves over 8 hours or for long-distance routes. Email a photo walkthrough or schedule a 15-minute virtual estimate and we will issue a flat-rate quote against the same crew size you booked hourly. The flat-rate becomes the not-to-exceed cap; if the move runs faster, we bill the lower hourly amount.
