How far long-distance moves from Edmonton go

For planning, treat a long-distance move as one that leaves the Edmonton region: the QEII run to Calgary, the drive north to Fort McMurray, a crossing of the Rockies or a cross-country move to Ontario. For moves inside the city and to nearby communities, see our Edmonton moving services.

Google Maps car driving time without stops, from downtown Edmonton (checked September 2026). A loaded moving truck with breaks and hours-of-service limits takes longer; your quote sets the actual schedule.

Those times assume a car that never stops. Federal hours-of-service regulations limit how long a commercial driver may drive each day, so a route mapped at 35 hours of driving becomes a trip of several days. Heading somewhere else? Include the address in your quote request and we will confirm in writing whether we can take it on.

Moving companies that move across Canada, and the alternatives

Hiring a long-distance moving company in Edmonton is one of four realistic options. Interprovincial movers are not always the right answer: each option puts the cost, work and risk in a different place, so compare them before you book anyone, including us.

Ways to move across Canada from Edmonton
OptionWhat you handleTrade-offsTends to suit
Full-service long-distance moverDeciding what goes; packing, unless you book itThe mover loads, protects, transports and unloads. Usually the largest bill of the four, but the least lifting and driving risk for you.Full households, families, anyone short on time
Portable container plus loading labourPacking, the container booking, any street permit, loading helpYou load on your own schedule and the container company handles transport. You need room for the container at both ends.Smaller homes, flexible dates
Rental truck plus labourPacking, driving the route, fuel, lodging, returning the truckOften the lowest cash outlay, but you carry the risk of mountain passes and winter highways, and the truck is your responsibility.Confident drivers with a smaller load
Freight for a few itemsBoxing or crating, getting items to and from pickup pointsFine for boxes and a few pieces, impractical for a full home, and items may be handled several times.Students, downsizers

Going the container or rental-truck route? Local Edmonton crews can still do the heavy lifting at this end; see help loading a rental truck.

How our long-distance quotes work

Instead of an hourly clock, Men In Trucks gives one written flat quote per long-distance job, built from four things:

  1. Your inventory. What is moving, room by room, including the basement and garage. Photos help. The inventory sets how much truck space your load needs.
  2. Access at both ends. Stairs, elevators, the carry to the truck, where it can stop and any building move windows.
  3. Distance and route. The kilometres, the highways and the season. A winter crossing of the Rockies is planned differently from a summer run down the QEII.
  4. Your delivery window. The pickup date you want and when you need your things at the other end.

Extras such as professional packing or piano moves go on the same quote. A flat quote covers the inventory and services it lists; if that list changes, tell us before moving day and we will revise the quote in writing. Our Edmonton moving cost guide explains the general cost drivers, and businesses should start with office and commercial moves.

Comparing long-distance quotes? The Government of Canada's moving advice suggests written quotes from at least three movers, listing items, cost, payment terms, timing and delivery commitments. Warning signs flagged by the Government of Canada and the Canadian Association of Movers include quotes given only by phone, large cash or non-refundable deposits, a low quote followed by move-day surcharges, and belongings held until extra charges are paid.

Pickup dates and delivery windows

Delivery timing depends on the size of your load, access at both ends and the date you book. Your written quote states the pickup date and the delivery window. What shapes that window:

  • Distance. Calgary and Toronto are different kinds of trip.
  • Weather. Prairie storms and mountain-pass closures can hold up any vehicle.
  • Access at the destination. Many buildings set their own move windows and elevator bookings; book yours early.

If you fly ahead, keep an essentials bag with you (documents, medication, chargers, clothes, bedding) and make sure someone reachable will be at the new address when the window opens.

Route notes: Alberta, BC, the Prairies and Ontario

Within Alberta

The QEII (Hwy 2) runs south through Red Deer to Calgary, about 300 km away; see our page on moving between Edmonton and Calgary. Fort McMurray and Grande Prairie are each roughly four and a half hours by car, and 511 Alberta posts road conditions for Alberta legs.

West through the Rockies to BC

Moves to Kamloops, Kelowna and Vancouver cross the Rockies, either on the Yellowhead (Hwy 16) through Jasper to BC Hwy 5 or on the Trans-Canada through Rogers Pass. Winter tires or chains are required on most BC routes from October 1 to April 30; on some routes outside mountain passes the requirement ends March 31 (Government of British Columbia). Check DriveBC before you travel. Route choices are covered in our guide to moving from Edmonton to Vancouver.

East across the Prairies

Yellowhead Hwy 16 is the main road east to Lloydminster and Saskatoon, then on to Regina by Saskatchewan Hwy 11 or across Manitoba to Winnipeg. On these long open-highway days, winter weather can shift a schedule. For cold-weather planning at this end, see our Edmonton winter moving guide.

Moving from Edmonton to Ontario

Ontario moves are among the longest domestic trips from Edmonton: about 3,400 km to Toronto on all-Canadian routes, a multi-day haul. If you are comparing cross-country movers or moving companies from Edmonton to Ontario, get the pickup date and delivery window in writing from each one. See our guide to moving from Edmonton to Toronto for the GTA end, or our page on moving from Edmonton to Ottawa for that route and its costs.

Protection and claims on a long-distance move

On a long-distance move your things travel further and are handled more. Government of Canada guidance says a mover's liability is generally 60 cents per pound (1.32 dollars per kilogram) per item unless you buy more protection, and that claims often must be made within 30 days for local moves and 60 days for long-distance moves. It also notes that boxes you pack yourself may not be covered, and suggests checking your home or tenant policy.

Those are general guidelines, not Men In Trucks policy. Before you book, ask us which protection options your quote includes. Then:

  • Photograph valuables and their condition before packing starts.
  • Carry jewellery, documents, medication and anything irreplaceable with you, not on the truck.
  • Keep your own room-by-room list, check it at delivery, and note any damage in writing with photos.

Long-distance movers in Edmonton: common questions

What counts as a long-distance move from Edmonton?

Movers draw the line in different places. As a rule of thumb, a move that leaves the Edmonton region, such as a move to Red Deer, Calgary or Fort McMurray, is usually treated as long distance, and so is any move to another province. Tell us both addresses and your written quote will state how your move is priced.

How is a long-distance move from Edmonton priced?

Men In Trucks gives one written flat quote per long-distance job. It is built from your inventory, the access at both ends (stairs, elevators, long carries and parking), the distance and your delivery window, plus any packing or specialty items such as a piano. Two moves of the same distance can differ a lot, so we do not publish long-distance price figures; send your details and we will quote your move in writing.

What is the cheapest way to move across Canada from Edmonton?

In cash terms, the lowest-cost approach is usually to move less: sell or give away bulky, low-value furniture, then drive a rental truck yourself or ship the rest in a portable container. Those options shift the driving, fuel, lodging and risk onto you, so compare them against a full-service quote before you decide. A middle option is a container or rental truck plus hired help for loading and unloading.

What should I do if something is damaged on a long-distance move?

Note any damage in writing as soon as possible, ideally before the crew leaves, and take photos of the item and its packaging. Government of Canada moving advice says claims often must be made within 60 days for long-distance moves, so do not wait. Before you book, ask us which protection options your quote includes.
