Edmonton to Vancouver by road: the basics
- Distance: about 1,160 km from downtown Edmonton, roughly 12 hours by car without stops.
- Main route: Yellowhead Hwy 16 west through Jasper, then BC Hwy 5 south to Kamloops and the Coquihalla, then Hwy 1 into Vancouver.
- Kamloops: about 810 km along the main route.
A car can do that in one long day. A loaded moving truck is slower, federal hours-of-service rules cap a commercial driver's daily driving, and mountain weather can add stops, so do not plan to unload the evening you load. Your written quote sets the pickup date and delivery window.
Yellowhead Hwy 16 or the Trans-Canada via Rogers Pass?
Two corridors link Edmonton with Vancouver.
| Compare | Yellowhead Hwy 16 and BC Hwy 5 (Coquihalla) | Trans-Canada Hwy 1 via Rogers Pass |
|---|---|---|
| Distance and car time | About 1,160 km, roughly 12 h | About 1,260 km, roughly 13 h |
| Highways | Hwy 16 through Jasper National Park, BC Hwy 5 via Kamloops, then Hwy 1 | Hwy 2 (QEII) to Calgary, then Hwy 1 through Golden, Rogers Pass and Revelstoke |
| Mountain pass to know | The Coquihalla, a high mountain pass (over 1,200 m) where conditions can change quickly | Rogers Pass, 1,330 m, the second-highest point on the Trans-Canada |
| Winter watch-outs | Snow and closures on the pass; check DriveBC | 135 avalanche paths along a 40 km stretch; avalanche-control closures can last 2 to 8 hours or longer (Parks Canada) |
| Worth knowing | The shorter option when roads are open | About 100 km longer. A closure on the Coquihalla (BC Hwy 5) can affect both options, so check DriveBC for the whole route before relying on it |
Google Maps car driving time without stops, from downtown Edmonton (checked September 2026). A loaded moving truck with breaks and hours-of-service limits takes longer; your quote sets the actual schedule.

Hiring Edmonton to Vancouver movers: from quote to delivery
- Describe both ends. Both addresses, your pickup date, a room-by-room inventory and access at each building: stairs, elevators, long carries, truck parking.
- Read the delivery window. One written flat quote reflects your inventory, access, route and season, and states the pickup date and delivery window. Ask how that window allows for mountain weather on Hwy 16, the Coquihalla or Rogers Pass.
- Pack. Do it yourself or add packing services in Edmonton to the same quote. Documents, medication and irreplaceable items travel with you.
- Load in Edmonton. Local Edmonton crews load your home; walk every room with them before the truck leaves.
- Receive in Vancouver. Keep your phone on once the window opens, and ask us beforehand how you would hear about a pass closure. Photograph and write down any damage straight away.

BC winter rules when moving from Alberta to BC
Winter tires or chains are required on most BC routes from October 1 to April 30; on some routes outside mountain passes the requirement ends March 31 (Government of British Columbia). Designated routes are signed and the rules are enforced.
BC's commercial vehicle rules go further: commercial vehicles whose licence lists a gross vehicle weight of 5,000 to 11,794 kg must carry chains or traction devices unless they have winter-rated tires, and those of 11,794 kg and over must carry steel chains on most major highways. Driving your own car over? The designated-route rules apply to you too. On the Alberta leg, winter tires are recommended; check 511 Alberta for road conditions before you go.
Check DriveBC for closures along the whole BC route, including planned avalanche control near Rogers Pass.
In Edmonton, winter adds parking bans and under eight hours of daylight around the December solstice; see our guide to moving in an Edmonton winter.
Arriving in Vancouver: buildings, elevators and parking
- Get your building's move rules. Most condo and strata buildings set their own move rules (elevator bookings, time windows, deposits or fees) through bylaws or building rules. Ask your property or strata manager early.
- Plan the truck's spot. Street parking is set by the municipality you are moving to, and loading bays by your building.
- Ask how to move your elevator booking. Closures on the Coquihalla or at Rogers Pass can shift arrival within your delivery window, so ask your strata or property manager how to change the slot.
- Plan the gap. Flying ahead? Pack bedding, chargers and a few days of clothes.

Deciding which furniture makes the trip
Measure your new rooms first, then check each large piece against them. List every big item in your quote request, including the ones you might sell, and settle the list before packing starts. The questions below cover when selling tends to pay.
When to go
May to September keeps the trip outside BC's winter tire and chain season and away from Edmonton's shortest days; a winter move just needs more room for weather. Renting month to month in Alberta? A tenant gives one full tenancy month of notice (Government of Alberta; general information, not legal advice).
A portable container or a full-service mover?
A container lets you load on your own schedule, but you do the lifting and need room for it at both ends. In Edmonton, one on a City road, sidewalk or boulevard generally needs an On-Street Construction and Maintenance (OSCAM) permit (see the City's road right-of-way page); in Vancouver, ask that municipality. A full-service mover costs more but takes on the lifting and the mountain driving. Local Edmonton crews can still load a container through moving labour in Edmonton.
Moving from Vancouver to Edmonton
Looking for Vancouver to Edmonton movers? The highways and BC winter rules are the same in reverse. Tell us your origin address and dates, and we will confirm in writing what we can quote. Once settled, Men In Trucks in Edmonton handles moves across the city.
Edmonton to Vancouver moves: common questions
Which highway do movers take from Edmonton to Vancouver?
The usual route, and the shorter of the two main options, is Yellowhead Hwy 16 west through Jasper, then BC Hwy 5 south to Kamloops and over the Coquihalla, then Hwy 1 into Vancouver: about 1,160 km. The main alternative is Hwy 2 south to Calgary and the Trans-Canada west through Rogers Pass, about 1,260 km. Weather and closures can change the choice on the day, so ask any mover you compare which route it plans and how a closure would affect your delivery window.
Do BC winter tire rules affect my move?
Yes, if any part of the trip falls between October 1 and April 30. Winter tires or chains are required on most BC routes in that period, and on some routes outside mountain passes the requirement ends March 31, according to the Government of British Columbia. They cover moving trucks and your own car if you drive over, so check DriveBC before you leave and allow for weather.
How far ahead should I book a move from Edmonton to Vancouver?
As a suggestion, start collecting written quotes about eight weeks ahead and book four to six weeks before your pickup date. If you rent month to month in Alberta, give written notice before the rental month starts, then book the move for the last days of that month. Once you have a delivery window, book the elevator or loading area at your Vancouver building; if your date is sooner, ask anyway and we will confirm in writing what we can offer.
Is it cheaper to sell furniture or move it to Vancouver?
It depends on the piece. Long-distance quotes follow what goes on the truck, so bulky items that are cheap to replace, such as flat-pack shelving or a worn sofa, often cost less to sell or give away than to move. Solid, valuable or sentimental furniture usually earns its space. Ask us to quote the move with and without the big pieces so you can compare real numbers.
