Moving day in Vancouver: rules to know before you book

Three things shape a Vancouver move: where the truck can park and load, what your building allows, and when you have to be out. City rules and fees change, so check the City of Vancouver's current page before you rely on a detail. Official links open in a new tab.

Where the truck can park and load

  • Large-vehicle limits. The City of Vancouver lists moving vans among its large vehicles, with a time limit on daytime street parking and no overnight street parking without a permit.
  • Reserved curb space. A City temporary street occupancy permit holds curb space or meters for a moving truck, and residents moving in or out of their own address can apply themselves. Per the City's page, a car parked before the signs go up is not towed, so apply early and plan a backup spot.
  • Loading zones and commercial lanes. These are for vehicles with City commercial permits and have short time limits, so a reserved curb space is usually the reliable option for a full move.
  • Rear lanes and bike lanes. A rear lane has to stay passable, with room in front of garages, and trucks cannot stop or unload in a bike lane.
  • Your own parking permit. A City residential parking permit stops being valid when you move, so apply again at your new address.

The City's current pages: large vehicles, temporary street occupancy permits (fee and lead time), commercial loading zones and lanes, parking where there are no signs and residential parking permits.

Strata buildings: elevator bookings and move rules

Move rules in a BC strata, such as elevator bookings, the times moves are allowed and any move fee, come from that strata's own bylaws and rules, and bylaws and rules apply to tenants as well as owners. Ask your strata manager for them before you pick a date: the strata has to give owners and tenants access within one week (BC strata bylaws and rules). A move fee has to be reasonable and set out in a bylaw or ratified rule (Strata Property Regulation). Once the elevator is booked, send us the slot.

Renters: a full month of notice, and out by 1 p.m.

Renting month to month in BC? Your landlord must receive your written notice at least one full rental month before you move, and before rent is due: a complete rental month, not 30 days. The notice should carry your name, the date, the address, your move-out date and your signature (BC rules for ending a tenancy). On the last day you have to be out by 1 p.m. unless the landlord agrees otherwise (Residential Tenancy Act, section 37), so choose the earliest arrival window.

Rain, and the occasional snowfall

Plan for a wet day. Keep the walk from your door to the truck short and covered where you can, tape boxes shut along every seam, bag mattresses and cushions, and put books, papers and electronics in plastic bins. If it snows, the City's winter page says residents must clear the sidewalk in front of their home by a set time each morning: check the City of Vancouver's current page on winter maintenance.

What stays off the truck

Federal dangerous-goods rules apply to everyone who transports items such as propane, gasoline or paint (Transport Canada), so do not pack propane tanks, gasoline or other fuels, and tell us about anything flammable before move day. Furniture or a mattress you are leaving behind should not go in the lane: if it cannot be reused, the City's guide points to the Zero Waste Centre, a transfer station or the landfill, and fees may apply (check the City's current waste disposal guide).

How a move with us works

Sending the form is a request, not a charge.

  1. Send a booking request or ask for a written quote. The booking page shows the price for your crew and date before you send it.
  2. We confirm availability. The Vancouver team checks your details and contacts you by phone or email to confirm the date, the arrival window, the crew and anything priced separately.
  3. You pay the deposit. We send a payment link for the $105 deposit, and your move is booked once it is paid.
  4. Line up the building and the curb. You book the elevator and get your strata's move rules. If you want curb space held in Vancouver, you apply to the City as the resident. Then tell us where the truck can load.
  5. Moving day. Furniture is padded and wrapped, then loaded, moved and placed in the rooms you choose. Walk through each room before the crew leaves, and note any damage in writing with photos.

What we need for an accurate quote

  • Both addresses with unit numbers. North Vancouver and West Vancouver are separate municipalities from the City of Vancouver, which changes the price that applies.
  • Your home size or a short inventory. For an office, the number of workstations.
  • Access at both ends: floor, stairs or elevator, whether the elevator is booked, and the carry from the door to the truck.
  • Building and parking details: strata move rules, loading dock, rear lane, meters, or a street occupancy permit you have applied for.
  • Heavy or unusual items, your packing level, furniture to take apart and any extra stop.

Vancouver moving prices: how the rate card works

These are our published rates for local moves, plus applicable taxes. The price covers the crew, the truck and the time.

Local moving rates in Vancouver (plus applicable taxes). In the City of Vancouver, add a 1-hour travel charge at the same hourly rate.
CrewCity of VancouverMinimumNearby towns: first 3 hours
2 movers and a truck$150/hr3 hours$750 flat
3 movers and a truck$195/hr3 hours$950 flat
4 movers and a truck$245/hr4 hours$1,200 flat
5 movers and 2 trucks$325/hr4 hours$1,600 flat

Within the City of Vancouver. You pay the hourly rate for your crew, with a minimum of 3 hours for 2 or 3 movers and 4 hours for 4 or 5 movers, plus a 1-hour travel charge at your crew's hourly rate. So the smallest job, 2 movers for the 3-hour minimum plus the travel hour, is 4 hours at $150/hr outside the busy dates, plus applicable taxes. Extra time is billed at the same hourly rate.

Between Vancouver and surrounding communities. When a move starts or ends in a surrounding community listed in the booking form, such as Burnaby, Richmond, North Vancouver or Surrey, and the other address is in Vancouver or in any listed community, including the same one, the first 3 hours are the flat price in the table, then the hourly rate applies. Crews of 4 or 5 movers keep their 4-hour minimum, so their fourth hour is billed at the hourly rate.

Busy dates. Rates are higher on some busy dates (Friday to Sunday, May to September and around month-end), and the booking page shows the hourly rate for your date. The flat price for the first 3 hours in surrounding communities is the same on every date.

Deposit and cancellation. Booking is a request: the Vancouver team confirms availability, then sends a payment link for the $105 deposit, and your move is booked once it is paid. Deposits are refundable if you cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours before your move; inside 48 hours a fee may apply.

Quoted separately. Packing, heavy items such as pianos and safes, and extra stops are confirmed with you before the move. Long-distance moves get one written flat quote.

What you can check before you book

Comparing Vancouver movers? The Government of Canada recommends written quotes, a real business address and no large upfront deposit (moving advice from the Office of Consumer Affairs), and Consumer Protection BC suggests getting an estimate in writing and asking how deposits work (its tips on choosing a moving company). Here is how this page answers each point:

  • Published rates. The rate card, the minimums and the travel charge are on this page.
  • Everything in writing. Your written quote or booking confirmation arrives before move day, and changes are confirmed in writing.
  • No deposit until we confirm. The deposit is requested only after the Vancouver team confirms availability.
  • Contact details that match. Men In Trucks Moving Inc. was founded in Ottawa in 2010, and the Vancouver address, phone and email on this page are the ones on the email you get after you send a request.

Where we move in and around Vancouver

In the City of Vancouver

  • Downtown peninsula: Downtown, Coal Harbour, the West End, Yaletown and Gastown.
  • Around Broadway and False Creek: Mount Pleasant, Fairview and Olympic Village.
  • West side: Kitsilano, Kerrisdale, Dunbar and Marpole.
  • East side and south: Commercial Drive, Grandview-Woodland and South Vancouver.

In the busy commercial areas the City lists (Downtown, Broadway, West 4th, Kingsway, Kerrisdale and South Granville), a lane beside commercial properties counts as a commercial loading zone even where it is not marked. Check the City's current page on commercial loading zones and lanes before you plan to load there.

Surrounding communities in Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley and the Sea-to-Sky

Each community below is within 100 km by road of our downtown office. These are service areas, not office locations, and distances are measured by road to each town centre, so your quote uses your actual address.

  • North Shore and Sea-to-Sky: West Vancouver, North Vancouver, Lions Bay and Squamish.
  • Burnaby, New Westminster and the Coquitlam area: Burnaby, New Westminster, Port Moody, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Anmore and Belcarra.
  • Richmond, Delta, Surrey and White Rock: Richmond; Delta, including Ladner, Tsawwassen and North Delta; Surrey, including Cloverdale; and White Rock.
  • Langley, Maple Ridge and the Fraser Valley: Langley City; the Township of Langley, including Fort Langley and Aldergrove; Pitt Meadows; Maple Ridge; Abbotsford; and Mission.

Local notes

  • North Shore. Some crossings, including the Lions Gate Bridge, have truck weight limits, which can affect the route between Vancouver and the North Shore (BC load-limit list (PDF)). In the City of North Vancouver, holding street parking for a moving truck needs a City street use permit, applied for at least 10 full business days ahead (City of North Vancouver). The District of North Vancouver is a separate municipality with its own rules.
  • Burnaby. Burnaby limits overnight street parking for heavier vehicles (City of Burnaby), so do not plan on leaving a loaded truck on the street overnight.
  • Surrey. Heavy trucks may park off Surrey's truck routes only temporarily while making a delivery (City of Surrey).

Ferries and out-of-area moves

Bowen Island, the Sunshine Coast and Vancouver Island need a ferry crossing for the truck, which changes scheduling and cost. They are quoted separately, so tell us your destination when you ask for a quote. Chilliwack and Whistler are also outside the local area and get a written quote instead of the local rates.

Long-distance moves from and to Vancouver

A move that leaves the Vancouver area gets one written flat quote for the job, built from your inventory, the access at both ends and your dates. Nothing is booked unless you accept it.

Vancouver moving questions

How much do movers cost in Vancouver?

Within the City of Vancouver our published rates are $150/hr for 2 movers and a truck, $195/hr for 3 movers, $245/hr for 4 movers and $325/hr for 5 movers with 2 trucks, plus applicable taxes. The minimum is 3 hours (4 hours for 4 or 5 movers), plus a 1-hour travel charge at your crew's hourly rate. Moves to or from surrounding communities start at a flat $750 for the first 3 hours.

How far ahead should I book movers in Vancouver?

As soon as your date is firm. Friday to Sunday, May to September and month-end are the busy dates. Your strata's elevator booking and a City street occupancy permit each run on their own timeline, so start those early.

Do I need a permit to park a moving truck in Vancouver?

It depends on your block and how long the truck stays. The City lists moving vans among its large vehicles, with a time limit on daytime street parking and no overnight parking without a permit. To hold curb space, residents can apply for a temporary street occupancy permit. Check the City of Vancouver's current pages for the limits, the fee and the lead time: the links are in the section on where the truck can park and load.

What should I arrange with my strata before moving day?

Ask your strata manager for the move rules before you pick a date. Elevator bookings, allowed move times and any move fee come from each strata's own bylaws and rules, and those apply to tenants as well as owners. Then send us the elevator slot.

What time do I have to be out of my rental in BC?

By 1 p.m. on the day the tenancy ends, unless your landlord agrees otherwise (Residential Tenancy Act, section 37). For a last-day move-out, choose the earliest arrival window.

What size crew do I need?

Take the booking form's suggestion as a first pass: 2 movers up to a 1-bedroom, 3 movers for a 2-bedroom, 4 for a 3-bedroom, and 5 movers with 2 trucks for anything larger. You can choose another crew size. The suggestion goes by home size alone, so add two Vancouver details to your request: the elevator slot your strata has given you, and the 1 p.m. move-out if your tenancy ends that day. Crew size is one of the details the Vancouver team confirms with you before any deposit is requested.

How does the deposit work, and can I cancel?

No payment is taken when you send the form. After the Vancouver team confirms availability, we send a payment link for the $105 deposit, and your move is booked once it is paid. Deposits are refundable if you cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours before your move; inside 48 hours a fee may apply.

How do I prepare for rain or snow on moving day?

Plan for a wet day: tape boxes shut along every seam, bag mattresses and cushions, and put books, papers and electronics in plastic bins. If it snows, check the City of Vancouver's current winter maintenance page for when residents must clear their sidewalk.
