Moving day in Halifax: curb space, the winter parking ban and building rules

Each municipal, provincial or federal rule below links to its official page, because rules change. Treat it as general information, not legal advice.

Parking and loading at the curb

Start with the signs on your street. The municipality's parking guidance explains what each one allows.

Halifax curb signs on moving day
Sign or situationWhat it means for the truck
No ParkingThe truck may park while it is actively being loaded or unloaded.
Signed loading zoneUp to 30 minutes of active loading while the zone is in effect.
No StoppingNo stopping at all. Some downtown streets carry it during rush-hour periods, and vehicles left there are towed.
Winter parking ban declaredNo vehicles on the street overnight.
A lane or sidewalk would be blockedCall 311 before moving day; a right-of-way permit may apply.

On a street with parking restrictions, check the municipality's parking permits page: it lists resident, visitor and commuter permits and describes the short-term visitor permit as one for a visitor or service provider.

If loading will take longer than a sign allows, ask your building about a loading dock or a driveway. If your move would need to block a lane or a sidewalk, call 311 first: the municipality's right-of-way permits page lists a permit type, Special Move, for commercial work in the public right of way, such as moving activities, and 311 can tell you whether it applies to your move. Tell us what the signs say at both addresses and we plan the truck spot around them.

Halifax's urban core also has designated truck routes under By-law T-400. Trucks may leave them to reach a delivery address by the most direct way, and we plan our route accordingly.

The winter parking ban

Halifax's overnight winter parking ban season runs from mid-December to the end of March. The ban is enforced only when the municipality declares it, and while it is enforced vehicles must be parked off the street overnight. Two zones can be declared separately: Zone 1 (Central), which takes in the Halifax peninsula and downtown Dartmouth inside Highway 111 plus some surrounding areas, and Zone 2 (Non-Central) outside it. On the municipality's page you can check the status, look up your zone by address and sign up for phone, text or email notifications.

On winter moving days we check the ban status and avoid leaving the truck on the street overnight. Whatever the status, a vehicle that interferes with snow clearing can be towed at any time.

Apartment and condo buildings

Ask building management about elevator booking, the times moves are allowed and loading-dock access, and share the rules with us. The booking form asks about elevators and stairs at each address.

Renting: check your notice before you set a date

Notice periods in Nova Scotia depend on your lease type and on the day your rent is due. The province's page for Form C, the tenant's Notice to Quit, sets out the period for each lease type (for example, at least 3 months before the end of a year-to-year lease) and says the notice has to be given before the day of the month rent is due, which can make the deadline earlier than it looks. It does not cover fixed-term leases, so confirm your deadline with Residential Tenancies before you set a date.

Before moving day

  • Furniture or a mattress you are leaving behind: a single-unit home can put out one bulky item per garbage collection day, and a building with up to six units two in total. Buildings with more than six units get no curbside collection, so ask the landlord or property manager. See the municipality's garbage collection page.
  • What not to pack: propane tanks, gasoline, other fuels, paint and household chemicals. Federal dangerous-goods rules restrict what a hired mover may carry. HRM residents can take them to the household special waste depot on its scheduled days.
  • Keep with you: jewellery, cash, medication and your important papers.

From request to moving day

  1. Send a request. Make a booking request at the published rates, or start with a written quote. Either way, nothing is booked or charged yet.
  2. The Halifax team confirms. They check your details, then phone or email you to settle the date, the arrival window and the crew.
  3. You pay the deposit. A payment link for the $105 deposit follows, and paying it books the move.
  4. Sort out access. Book the elevator if your building asks for it, and read the parking signs at both addresses.
  5. Moving day. The crew wraps and loads your furniture, moves it and sets it down in the rooms you choose. Do a walk-through together before the crew leaves.

What the team needs for an accurate quote

  • Pickup and destination addresses, with unit numbers.
  • Your moving date, and whether it can shift.
  • How big the home is, or how many workstations an office has.
  • Access at each end: an elevator (booked or not), flights of stairs, parking or loading limits.
  • Anything heavy: a piano, a safe, gym equipment.
  • The packing level (none, partial or full), furniture that needs taking apart, and extra stops.

How local moving prices work in Halifax

Our published Halifax rates are below, plus applicable taxes. A rate pays for the crew, the truck and the time.

Swipe the table sideways to see minimums and flat prices.

Halifax moving rates by crew size on standard dates (plus applicable taxes; hourly rates are higher on some peak dates)
CrewInside the Halifax Regional MunicipalityMinimumSurrounding communities: flat price, first 3 hours
2 movers and a truck$150/hr3 hours$750
3 movers and a truck$195/hr3 hours$950
4 movers and a truck$245/hr4 hours$1,200
5 movers and two trucks$325/hr4 hours$1,600
  • Peak dates: the table shows standard-date rates. Hourly rates are higher on some dates (Friday to Sunday, May to September and around month-end), and the booking page shows the hourly rate for the date you pick. The flat price for the first 3 hours stays the same.
  • Inside the HRM (see Where we move): billed by the hour. The minimum is 3 hours with 2 or 3 movers and 4 hours with 4 or 5, and a 1-hour travel charge at the crew rate is added. The smallest booking is therefore 4 hours at $150/hr on a standard date: 2 movers and a truck for the 3-hour minimum plus the travel hour.
  • To, from or between surrounding communities such as Elmsdale, Windsor, Chester or Truro: a flat $750, $950, $1,200 or $1,600 (by crew size) for the first 3 hours, then the hourly rate. With 4 or 5 movers the minimum is 4 hours, so the fourth hour is billed at the hourly rate on top of the flat price.
  • Booking and deposit: a booking begins as a request. Once the Halifax team confirms availability, you get a payment link for the $105 deposit, and paying it confirms the move. Deposits are refundable if you cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours before the move; inside 48 hours a fee may apply.
  • Confirmed separately, before your move: packing, pianos, safes, gym equipment, taking furniture apart and extra stops.
  • Long-distance moves are quoted differently: one written flat quote, not an hourly rate.

What you can verify before you book

We are new here, so these are the things you can check for yourself.

  • Direct Halifax contacts: the phone number, the email inbox and the office address are on this page. Moves are arranged by phone, by email or online.
  • Rates in writing: the full card is published above.
  • A written quote before you book, if you want one.
  • A deposit that waits: the $105 deposit is requested only after the team confirms your date.
  • Company history: founded in Ottawa in 2010.

Where we move: Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford and beyond

Our local service area is the Halifax Regional Municipality plus surrounding communities within about 100 km by road of our Hollis Street office. A move between the Halifax and Dartmouth sides crosses the harbour or goes around Bedford Basin, so we plan the route from both addresses.

Inside the Halifax Regional Municipality (hourly rates)

  • Halifax: downtown Halifax, the South End, the North End, the West End, Fairview, Clayton Park, Rockingham, Armdale and Spryfield.
  • Dartmouth side: Dartmouth (downtown Dartmouth included), Cole Harbour and Eastern Passage.
  • Bedford and Sackville: Bedford, Bedford West, Lower Sackville and Middle Sackville.
  • North: Waverley and Fall River off Highway 118, and Beaver Bank.
  • West: Lakeside and Timberlea, then Hubley, Upper Tantallon, Tantallon and Hubbards along Highway 103, with Hammonds Plains to the northwest and Prospect to the southwest.
  • East: Lake Echo, Porters Lake, East Chezzetcook and Musquodoboit Harbour along Highway 107, and Middle Musquodoboit to the northeast.

Moving in Dartmouth, Cole Harbour or Eastern Passage

The Dartmouth side of the harbour is priced exactly like the Halifax side, whichever side you start on: the same hourly rates, minimum and 1-hour travel charge. Downtown Dartmouth inside Highway 111 is in the same winter parking ban zone (Zone 1) as the Halifax peninsula.

Surrounding communities (flat price for the first 3 hours)

  • North on Highway 102: the East Hants communities of Enfield (about 41 km), Elmsdale (47 km), Lantz (49 km) and Shubenacadie (59 km), then Stewiacke (68 km), Brookfield (87 km) and Truro (95 km) in Colchester County.
  • Northwest on Highway 101: Mount Uniacke (about 38 km) in East Hants, Windsor (65 km) and Hantsport (75 km) in West Hants, and Wolfville (90 km) in Kings County.
  • West and southwest on Highway 103: Chester (about 67 km) and Mahone Bay (87 km) in Lunenburg County.

These are service areas, not office locations. Distances are approximate, measured by road (fastest car route) from our Halifax office to the town centre, so your quote uses your actual address. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors.

Long-distance moves from and to Halifax

Moving to Halifax, or leaving for another part of Nova Scotia or another province? A long-distance move gets one written flat quote, built from what you are moving, the access at both ends and your dates. If you are leaving Halifax, pick Long-distance in the booking form and name the city or town you are heading to. If you are moving to Halifax from farther away, call (902) 700-0617 or email [email protected].

Men In Trucks teams also work in Ottawa, Toronto, Montréal, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. The office you send your request to prepares your quote.

Halifax moving questions

How much do movers cost in Halifax?

On standard dates, for a move inside the Halifax Regional Municipality, 2 movers and a truck are $150/hr, 3 movers $195/hr, 4 movers $245/hr and 5 movers with two trucks $325/hr, plus applicable taxes. There is a 3-hour minimum with 2 or 3 movers and a 4-hour minimum with 4 or 5, and a 1-hour travel charge at the crew rate is added. To, from or between surrounding communities such as Elmsdale, Windsor or Truro, the first 3 hours are a flat $750, $950, $1,200 or $1,600 by crew size, then the hourly rate applies. Hourly rates are higher on some peak dates (Friday to Sunday, May to September and around month-end), and the booking page shows the hourly rate for your date.

What is the smallest move you take?

Any size, including a single item, but the minimum applies. Inside the Halifax Regional Municipality that is the 3-hour minimum plus the 1-hour travel charge, so 4 hours at $150/hr with 2 movers and a truck on a standard date, plus applicable taxes. The booking page shows the total for your date before you send anything.

Do you move between Halifax and Dartmouth, Bedford or Sackville?

Yes. Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford, Sackville and the other communities of the Halifax Regional Municipality within about 100 km by road of our office are one hourly zone, so a move across the harbour is priced like a move down the street: the hourly rate for your crew, the minimum and a 1-hour travel charge.

What size crew do I need?

The booking form suggests a crew from your home size: a studio or 1 bedroom, 2 movers; 2 bedrooms, 3 movers; 3 bedrooms, 4 movers; 4 or more bedrooms, 5 movers and two trucks. You can choose any crew size.

How far ahead should I book movers in Halifax?

As soon as your date is firm. Nothing is booked until the Halifax team confirms availability for your date and you pay the $105 deposit, so sending a request early costs nothing. Hourly rates are higher on some peak dates (Friday to Sunday, May to September and around month-end), so if your date can shift, compare dates on the booking page. If you rent, check your notice first: in Nova Scotia the notice period depends on your lease type and on the day your rent is due, so confirm your deadline with Residential Tenancies.

Do I need a parking permit for a moving truck in Halifax?

It depends on the street and on where the truck will park and load. A vehicle may park in a No Parking zone while it is actively being loaded or unloaded. The municipality's parking permits page lists a short-term visitor permit for a visitor or service provider on a street with parking restrictions, and its right-of-way permits page lists a permit type, Special Move, for commercial work in the public right of way, such as moving activities. If the truck cannot load from a driveway, a loading dock or a legal curb space, or would block a lane or a sidewalk, call 311 before moving day to ask whether a permit is needed.

Can I move while the Halifax winter parking ban is on?

Yes. The ban applies overnight, not during the day, and only when the municipality declares it during the mid-December to end-of-March season, so the ban itself does not stop a daytime move. Plan for two things: while the ban is enforced, no vehicle, yours or a rental truck, can be left on the street overnight, and a vehicle that interferes with snow clearing can be towed at any time. Check the status and look up your zone by address on the municipality's parking ban page.

How do apartment and condo moves work in Halifax?

Start with your building: ask the property manager or landlord about elevator booking, the times moves are allowed and loading-dock access, then enter the details in the booking form, which asks about elevators and stairs at each address. Three things to plan around in Halifax: a signed loading zone allows up to 30 minutes of active loading, so a dock or driveway suits a full move better; some downtown streets are No Stopping during rush-hour periods; and buildings with more than six units get no curbside bulky-item collection, so ask the landlord about furniture you are leaving behind.

How does the deposit work?

Sending a booking request costs nothing. Once the Halifax team confirms availability, you get a payment link for the $105 deposit, and the move is confirmed when it is paid. Deposits are refundable if you cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours before the move; inside 48 hours a fee may apply.
