Toronto to Montréal and Montréal to Toronto Movers

Moving from Toronto or the GTA to Montréal, or from Montréal to Toronto? Each move between the two cities gets one written flat quote, built from your two addresses, your home, your date and the access at both ends. Start with the office in the city you are leaving; it prepares your quote, and nothing is booked or charged unless you accept it.

Our Montréal office works in English and in French; our Toronto office works in English. Starting in Toronto and ready for the full form instead of a quote request? Open the Toronto booking form.

One route, two Men In Trucks offices

Men In Trucks Moving Inc. is a moving company founded in Ottawa in 2010, with offices in both cities. Toronto and Montréal are both new offices for us, so this page sticks to how a move between the two cities is quoted, which office handles it and what to plan at each end.

Moves are arranged by phone, by email or online.

Which office quotes your move

Men In Trucks has an office in each city, and for a move between them the rule is simple: whichever office receives your request owns the quote. The other office is noted on your request so both teams know about the move, and nothing is booked twice: one request, one quote, one office to deal with.

Moving from Toronto to Montréal

Use the Toronto quote form. Choose your move type (Long-distance, or Office/Commercial for an office), pick Another province as the destination and type Montréal or the Québec town you are moving to. Our Toronto team prepares your quote, in English.

Moving from Montréal to Toronto

Use the Montréal quote form or the French form. Choose your move type (Long-distance, or Office/Commercial for an office), pick Another province as the destination and type Toronto or the Ontario town you are moving to. Our Montréal team prepares your quote, in English or in French.

Why the form follows your starting point: each booking form takes pickup addresses in its own city's area only. If you call or email instead, the office that receives your request quotes the move.

How the written flat quote works

  1. Tell us about the move. In the quote form of the city you are leaving, choose your move type (Long-distance, or Office/Commercial for an office), pick Another province as the destination and type the city or town you are moving to, then enter both addresses. Nothing is booked or charged when you send it.
  2. Get one price in writing. The office that received your request reviews the details and writes one flat quote for the whole move.
  3. Accept it or not. Until you accept, nothing is reserved and no deposit is asked for. Settle any question about the plan, dates included, before you say yes.
  4. Be present at both ends. The Province of Ontario advises supervising the pickup and delivery of your belongings and making a note of anything missing or damaged before the movers leave.

What we need for an accurate quote

  • The street address you are leaving and the one you are moving to, city or town included.
  • The date you would like, and any fixed dates, such as the day your lease ends or the first day you get the keys.
  • What you are moving: from a studio to a home of 4 bedrooms or more, or the number of workstations for an office.
  • Access at each building: elevator or not, booked or not, and the number of flights, outside staircases included.
  • What the truck faces at each curb: a loading zone, a parking permit, a long walk to the door, low clearance.
  • Anything heavy or awkward, such as a piano, a safe or gym equipment, the packing help you want, and furniture that has to come apart.

We publish no long-distance prices, transit times, delivery dates or departure schedules: every move between Toronto and Montréal is priced and planned from its own details. The written flat quote covers the move as you described it, so if something changes before you accept, such as an extra room or a different delivery address, tell us so the quote matches the move.

What a move between Toronto and Montréal can include

Homes, condos and apartments

Houses, townhouses, condos and apartments, from a studio to 4 or more bedrooms: the form asks for the size of the home you are leaving, and the access at both buildings is part of the quote.

Office and commercial moves

Choose Office/Commercial as the move type and Another province as the destination. The form then asks for the number of workstations instead of a home size.

Packing help

Choose no packing, partial packing or full packing in the form; the office preparing your quote confirms it with you before the move.

Furniture disassembly and reassembly

Say in the form whether furniture has to be taken apart at pickup and put back together at delivery.

Heavy or unusual items

Pianos, safes, gym equipment and other heavy items: tell us in your request; the team confirms what is needed before the move.

Small moves

Moving a studio or only a few large items? Choose Studio as the size and list the items in the form's special instructions; you get one written flat quote for what you describe.

Planning the route and the dates

The drive between the two cities

By road, the usual route links Highway 401 on the Ontario side with Autoroute 20 on the Québec side. Your quote is built from your two actual addresses. Before a moving day, Ontario 511 (opens in a new tab) shows road conditions, closures, construction and winter driving information on the Ontario part of the trip.

Timing

Put your preferred date in the request and any limits at either end in the notes, such as a lease that ends on a set day or a building that only allows moves at certain times, and settle the timing with the team before you accept the quote.

July 1 and Québec leases

Many Québec leases run from July 1 to June 30, so the days around July 1 are a busy time to move in Montréal. If your lease ends June 30, send your request as soon as your date is firm and book the elevator or loading dock at both buildings early.

Leaving a rental in Québec? On a 12-month lease the tenant generally sends the written non-renewal notice 3 to 6 months before the lease ends, so a lease ending June 30 means a notice between January 1 and March 31. Check your own dates on JuridiQC (opens in a new tab) (in French) or with the Tribunal administratif du logement. This is general information, not legal advice.

Winter at both curbs

  • Toronto. Once the City declares a major snowstorm, vehicles may not park on its signed snow routes, which run mostly downtown and include every streetcar line; orange temporary signs mark streets where snow is being cleared, and parking stays banned there until the work is done (City of Toronto (opens in a new tab)).
  • Montréal. Temporary no-parking signs for snow loading are put up ahead of each operation, override the permanent signs, and vehicles left in the way are towed. The City's page on these signs was last updated in January 2024, so check the current version for your street: snow-removal signs (opens in a new tab) (page in French).

Condos, elevators and curb space at both ends

A long-distance truck still loads at one curb or loading dock and unloads at another, and the two cities set their rules differently. Each rule below links its official page. Rules are revised from time to time, so read the linked page close to your date. General information, not legal advice.

At a Toronto address

Toronto condos set their own move rules, which can cover how the elevator is booked, the hours when moves may happen and whether a deposit is taken. In Ontario, each condo corporation's board passes its rules, and they must be reasonable and consistent with the Condominium Act (Condominium Authority of Ontario (opens in a new tab)).

At the curb, a moving truck may generally stay on a City of Toronto street while it is actively loading or unloading, as long as it respects the posted signs: a No Parking sign still allows loading, a No Standing or No Stopping sign does not. Moving days are outside the City's special parking consideration program (City of Toronto parking regulations (opens in a new tab)).

At a Montréal address

At each building, check early with the manager or the condo syndicate: does a move need an elevator reservation, a fixed time slot or a loading-dock booking? On the Québec side, the OPC moving tip sheet (opens in a new tab) puts reserving the elevator and securing a parking space for the truck on its checklist before moving day.

Whether you need a permit to reserve curb space depends on your borough and your street. A permit is usually needed if parking has to be prohibited, if the street has parking meters, or if the truck would block a sidewalk or a bike path, and some boroughs also regulate pedestrian streets. Some boroughs ask for a permit for any move done by a professional mover, and a borough can require that permit to be in the moving company's name. Temporary no-parking signs must be official signs rented from a specialized company, installed ahead of the move and declared to the Agence de mobilité durable (Park a moving van or moving truck, Ville de Montréal (opens in a new tab)). That page covers the City of Montréal's boroughs; Westmount, Mont-Royal, Hampstead and the other independent cities on the island set their own rules, so check with your city. Name your borough or city in your request, and settle with us who applies for a permit before you accept the quote.

Questions for the building at each end

  • On which days and at what times can residents move, and how is the service elevator reserved?
  • Is there a move deposit or a damage deposit?
  • Where will the truck park to load: a dock, a laneway or the street? Is there a height limit?
  • Does the building need anything in writing from the moving company before the move?

If the answer to the last question is yes, forward the building's request to us before you accept the quote; the office preparing it will tell you whether it can provide what is asked.

English and French

At the Montréal end, our Montréal office works in English and in French, and its booking form is also available in French. A request sent to the Montréal office, through its booking form, by phone or by email, is quoted by the Montréal team, in the language you choose. Our Toronto office works in English; on a move that starts in Toronto, the Montréal office is named in your request so the two teams can coordinate.

Before moving day, at either end

  • Renting in Toronto? Ontario tenants generally have to give at least 60 days' notice in writing, on the Landlord and Tenant Board's Form N9. The LTB brochure we link was last updated in April 2018, so check your dates with the LTB itself before you choose a moving day: How a tenant can end their tenancy (Tribunals Ontario) (opens in a new tab). Leaving a lease in Montréal? See July 1 and Québec leases.
  • Hazardous products: paint, propane tanks, fuel and household chemicals. Federal dangerous-goods rules limit what a hired mover can carry (Transport Canada (opens in a new tab)). Toronto collects household hazardous waste at drop-off depots, at Community Environment Days and through Toxic Taxi pickups (City of Toronto (opens in a new tab)). In Montréal, the écocentres (opens in a new tab) accept paint and propane cylinders (page in French).
  • Valuables and documents. Move valuables, such as jewellery and artwork, and your important documents yourself; both the Province of Ontario and Québec's OPC recommend it.
  • Is the move for a new job or full-time studies? The Canada Revenue Agency sets out which moving expenses may be deductible; as a general rule, the new home has to be at least 40 km closer to the new workplace or school, measured by the shortest public route (CRA, line 21900 moving expenses (opens in a new tab)). General information, not tax advice.
  • Arriving in Montréal? Québec.ca has an online address-change service that notifies several Québec government departments and organizations at once; check whether it applies to you (Québec.ca, moving and new address (opens in a new tab)).

Your rights when you hire a mover

  • In Ontario: the rules expect a written contract that names the mover and lists the services with itemized prices, the total, the dates and how you pay. The final bill can only go a limited amount above the contract estimate, unless you need extra supplies or services and agree to them, and a mover cannot keep your belongings to force a new deal (Hiring a mover, ontario.ca (opens in a new tab)).
  • In Québec: the OPC explains what to check before you hire a mover, how estimates and contracts work, and what to know about payment terms and cancellation (OPC advice before a move (opens in a new tab)).

General information, not legal advice.

How prices work on this route

Between Toronto and Montréal: one written flat quote. A move between the two cities is long-distance in both booking forms: with the Long-distance move type or an Another province destination, the form shows no online price. The office that receives your request sends one written flat quote for the whole move, and nothing is booked or charged unless you accept it.

Staying in one city's area instead? Our Toronto and Montréal offices use the same local rate card. When both addresses are in the City of Toronto (including North York, Scarborough, Etobicoke, York and East York) or both are in the City of Montréal (its 19 boroughs), the move is hourly, with a 3-hour minimum for 2 or 3 movers and 4 hours for 4 or 5 movers, plus 1 hour of travel at the crew rate for your date. When one or both addresses are in a surrounding community listed in that city's booking form, the first 3 hours are a flat price, then the hourly rate for your date applies; for 4 or 5 movers, the fourth hour is billed at that hourly rate. Westmount, Dorval and the other independent cities on Montréal island that the form lists are priced like the surrounding communities.

Local moves only (not for moves between Toronto and Montréal): rates by crew size on standard dates, plus HST (13%) in Toronto, plus applicable taxes in Montréal

Busy dates. Hourly rates can be higher on busy dates (Friday to Sunday, May to September and around month-end); every other date is a standard date. The booking form shows the exact hourly rate for your date. The flat first 3 hours stay the same on every date.

Deposit for a local booking in Toronto. Once the Toronto team confirms availability, we send a payment link for the $105 deposit, and your move is booked when it is paid. Deposits are refundable if you cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours before your move; inside 48 hours a fee may apply. For a local booking in Montréal, our Montréal team confirms the date, the arrival window and the crew with you before your move is booked.

Where a move between Toronto and Montréal can start and end

  • Toronto side. The Toronto booking form takes pickups in the City of Toronto (including North York, Scarborough, Etobicoke, York and East York) and in the surrounding communities it lists inside our 150 km local area, such as Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Markham, Oakville, Hamilton, Oshawa, Barrie, Kitchener, Waterloo and Niagara Falls.
  • Montréal side. The Montréal booking form takes pickups in the City of Montréal's 19 boroughs, in the independent cities on the island it lists, such as Westmount, Dorval and Pointe-Claire, and in the surrounding communities it lists inside our 100 km local area, such as Laval, Longueuil, Brossard, Saint-Lambert and Terrebonne.
  • Your destination. You type the city or town you are moving to, so a delivery to a community around the other city is requested the same way as a delivery to the city itself. Moving from Montréal to Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo or Niagara Falls? Use the Montréal form and type the town.

The places named here are service areas, not office locations. Distances inside each local area are measured by road from the office to each town centre, so your quote always uses your actual addresses.

Moves between Toronto and Montréal: common questions

How much does it cost to move from Toronto to Montréal?

We quote each Toronto to Montréal move as one written flat price, so there are no published figures for this route. The price depends on both addresses, how much you are moving, your date, the access at each building, and extras such as packing, disassembly or heavy items. You accept the quote before anything is booked or any deposit is asked for.

Which office handles a move from Montréal to Toronto?

Whichever office receives your request owns the quote. For a move that starts in Montréal, use the Montréal booking form, in English or in French, and the Montréal team quotes it; for a move that starts in Toronto, use the Toronto form. The other office is noted on the request so both teams know about it, and nothing is booked twice.

How long does a move between Toronto and Montréal take?

Transit times and delivery dates are not published, since every long-distance move is planned around its own details. Put your preferred date in the request, note any fixed dates at either end, and settle the timing with the team before you accept the quote.

Is it harder to move to or from Montréal around July 1?

Many Québec leases run from July 1 to June 30, so the days around July 1 are a busy time to move in Montréal. If your lease ends June 30, send your request as soon as your date is firm and book the elevator or loading dock at both buildings early. For a 12-month lease, the tenant's written non-renewal notice is generally due 3 to 6 months before the lease ends.

Can I arrange my move in French?

Yes, with our Montréal office. It works in English and in French, and its booking form is also available in French; a request sent to the Montréal office is quoted by the Montréal team. Our Toronto office works in English.

Do I need a parking permit for the moving truck in Montréal?

It depends on your borough and your street. A permit is usually needed if parking has to be prohibited, if the street has parking meters, or if the truck would block a sidewalk or a bike path, and some boroughs ask for one for any move done by a professional mover, sometimes in the moving company's name. Check your borough's section on the City of Montréal's page, and settle with us who applies before you accept the quote. Westmount and the other independent cities on the island set their own rules.

What do condo buildings in Toronto and Montréal need from me?

Each building sets its own move rules. Ask the property manager or condo syndicate at both ends which days and times moves are allowed, how the elevator and loading dock are booked, and whether a deposit or documents from the mover are needed, and send us the answers with your request.

Can you pack, take furniture apart or store my things on this move?

In the booking form you choose no packing, partial packing or full packing, and you say whether furniture must be taken apart and put back together; the office preparing your quote confirms these details with you before the move. Our Toronto and Montréal booking forms do not offer storage.
