What is a senior moving service in Ottawa?
A senior moving service is a full-service relocation built around an older adult, not just their belongings. In Ottawa that means a careful pace, a smaller team led by a senior-trained crew chief, downsizing-day support before move day, retirement-residence elevator and COI coordination, fragile-item wrapping for lifelong heirlooms, labelled “go-first” boxes for medications and bedside essentials, and plain-language family communication from quote through delivery. Men In Trucks Moving has handled senior relocations across Ottawa, Gatineau, Nepean, Kanata, Orleans and Barrhaven since 2010 — into Amica, Chartwell, Revera, Hazeldean Gardens, Symphony, City View Retirement, and dozens of independent and assisted-living residences.
Who we help: seniors moving themselves, adult children coordinating a parent’s move, Powers of Attorney, retirement residence move-in coordinators, estate trustees, and downsizing companies who want a moving partner that won’t rush the day.
Ottawa retirement residences we move families into every month
Our team has the elevator-booking process, COI requirements, and concierge protocols memorized for the Ottawa-Gatineau retirement-residence network. We move families into and between residences including:
- Independent living: Amica The Glebe, Amica Westboro Park, Chartwell Hampton House, Chartwell Stonehaven, Symphony Senior Living Orleans, Hazeldean Gardens (Kanata), City View Retirement Residence, Riverpath Retirement.
- Assisted living: Revera Aylmer, Revera Park Place, Forest Hill (Kanata), New Edinburgh Square, Promenade.
- Memory care: Maplewood Retirement, Garden Terrace, Carlingview Manor — with crew briefings on dementia-friendly handling and wayfinding cues.
- Long-term care transitions: The Ottawa Hospital, Bruyère Continuing Care, and Queensway Carleton discharges — coordinated with social workers and family Powers of Attorney.
If your residence is not on the list above, that is fine. We have moved into virtually every retirement community in the Ottawa-Gatineau area at least once. Send us the building name and we will tell you the booking lead-time, dock or elevator pad requirements, and any COI specifics from prior moves there.
Downsizing support before move day
The hardest part of a senior move is rarely the truck — it is deciding what fits in the new place and what does not. We work alongside Ottawa’s senior-move managers and downsizing specialists, or we can handle a simpler downsize ourselves: room-by-room sort with the senior present, donation-pickup coordination with Helping With Furniture and the Ottawa Mission, family-keepsake boxes labelled and routed to adult children, fragile glassware and china wrapped in archival tissue, and a careful inventory of high-value items signed at pickup. We never throw out anything without explicit family sign-off.
Working with adult children, Powers of Attorney, and out-of-town family
For families coordinating from Toronto, Calgary, or further away, we can do the entire move with the senior on-site and the family Power of Attorney on a video call. Our crew chief gives a five-minute walkthrough at the start and a five-minute walkthrough at the end, photographs anything that arrived with prior damage, and signs off on a delivery receipt only when both the senior and (if requested) the family member confirm. Quotes, change orders, and the deposit can be handled by the POA at any phone number on the file. Simple, professional, no surprises.
Storage between move dates
Closing dates and retirement-residence move-in dates often do not line up. We pick up from the original home, store in our heated, alarm-monitored 10,000 sq ft Ottawa warehouse, and deliver to the new residence on the date the family confirms. Daily, weekly, and monthly storage available. The same crew handles pickup and delivery, so nothing is touched twice. See our full storage Ottawa service for current rates and the inventory-list workflow we use, and our packing services if you want us to wrap before pickup. For seniors moving from a house into an Ottawa apartment or condo, our apartment movers team coordinates the building’s freight elevator and COI before move day.
We understand — moving a senior is not a normal move

Senior moving FAQ
How do you actually help seniors move differently from a regular move?
Three things. First, we book extra buffer time so the crew is never rushing — and we charge the same hourly rate even if the day runs long. Second, our crew leads are briefed on dementia awareness, low-mobility, and respecting pace. Third, we talk to whoever is coordinating — the senior themselves, an adult child, a POA, or a residence move-in coordinator — and keep everyone looped in by text and photo.
Do you pack everything, or just lift and load?
Both options are available. Our Basic package is lift-and-load only — you or family pack the boxes. Our Full-Service and White-Glove packages include full professional packing (we bring the boxes, paper, tape, and wardrobe boxes) and unpacking at the other end. Most senior clients choose Full-Service because packing is the most stressful part.
Can family be part of the day, even from another province?
Absolutely. We regularly work with adult children in Toronto, Vancouver, and as far as Arizona while their parent is still in Ottawa. We video-walkthrough the home, text photos during the move, and can coordinate directly with the residence manager or a trusted friend on the ground. You stay with your parent; we handle the logistics.
Do you handle the downsizing — deciding what to keep, donate, or store?
We help you plan it, and we handle the haul-away. Use the room-by-room guide and checklist on this page to make the keep/donate/gift decisions. On moving day we route donation items to Habitat ReStore, Diabetes Canada, Salvation Army, or Matthew House — whichever has the fastest pickup. Anything not donation-quality goes to our junk removal service (priced separately).
Are your movers trained to work with seniors?
Yes. Every crew lead goes through a senior-move briefing covering pace, respectful language, dementia awareness, and how to work around mobility aids. All movers are background-checked and uniformed. Many of our senior-move crew leads have 5+ years on our team and have done dozens of residence moves.
Can you coordinate directly with Chartwell, Amica, Revera, or other residences?
Yes — we do it every week. We’ll call the front desk to book the service elevator and loading bay, confirm quiet hours (most residences don’t allow moves during meal services), and submit our insurance certificate naming the residence. You don’t have to manage any of that yourself.
What does a typical senior move cost in Ottawa?
Most 1-bedroom senior moves run $700–$1,100 for Full-Service. A 2-bedroom downsize typically falls between $1,200 and $1,800. Our rates are transparent hourly ($150/hr for 2 movers, $195/hr for 3, $245/hr for 4 — truck included) with no surcharges for stairs, heavy items, or a slower pace. Use the estimator above for a personalised range.
How far in advance should we book?
For month-end and the 1st of the month (busiest residence move-in days), book 3–4 weeks out. For mid-month weekday moves we can often accommodate same-week. A $100 refundable deposit holds your slot — it comes off the final bill.
Do you move items between Ottawa and other provinces?
Yes. We run long-distance senior moves to and from Toronto, Montréal, Kingston, and the Maritimes routinely — often when a parent is moving to be near family. All long-distance senior moves include transit insurance and dedicated truck (no shared loads).
What if plans change or the move-in date shifts?
Residence move-in dates shift often — a room isn’t ready, a health issue comes up. We build flex into our schedule for senior moves and will reschedule at no charge as long as we know 48 hours in advance. The $100 deposit stays on your account for the rescheduled date.
Let us take the pressure off your family

Senior Moving in Ottawa â Questions Families Ask Most
Do you help with downsizing before the move?
We do not run an estate-sale or appraisal service ourselves, but we coordinate with three Ottawa-area downsizing specialists (Caring Transitions Ottawa, Smooth Move Senior Solutions, and Just-In-Time Move Management) and our crews are trained to receive a “keep / donate / sell” colour-coded floor plan and execute it on move day. We will deliver donations to Helping With Furniture, the Ottawa Mission, or Habitat ReStore on the same trip and bring you the donation receipts. Send us your downsizer’s room plan two days before the move and we will pre-load the truck so the donation drop is the first stop after origin.
Can you store furniture during the transition?
Yes. Our 10,000-sq-ft heated warehouse holds your inventory for as long as needed â typical senior-transition stays are 30 to 90 days while the family decides what stays with the parent and what goes to children or grandchildren. Storage is billed monthly by vault (approximately one bedroom of contents per vault). Pickup from storage to a new address â whether that is a retirement residence, a long-term care home, or a child’s home â uses the same crew and truck system as the original move.
Do you handle Veterans Affairs and military-spouse moves?
Yes. We hold $5M cargo and $2M liability insurance which meets the Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) and BGRS Brookfield Global Relocation Services thresholds for residential moves. We provide the inventory list, the weighted bill of lading, and the receipts in the format VAC’s reimbursement office requires. If you are moving under the Veterans Independence Program (VIP) or a CAF posting, send us your file number and we will invoice in the format your benefits clerk accepts.
Do you coordinate with the senior Residence on the move-in window?
Always. Most Ottawa retirement residences (Chartwell, Revera, Amica, Verve, Sienna) require a booked elevator window and a building manager walk-through before the truck unloads. We will call the residence on your behalf the morning of the move, confirm the elevator pad is in place, and stage the truck so the unload finishes inside the booked window. We have done this routine at every major Ottawa residence and know the loading-dock layout, the mattress-disposal rules, and the parking-permit requirements at each one.
Do you bring lift-gates or stair-climbing equipment for stair-only buildings?
Our 26-foot trucks have hydraulic lift-gates standard, and our crews carry 4-wheel furniture dollies, shoulder straps, and hand trucks rated for 800 lb. For walk-up triplexes and older Ottawa apartment buildings without elevators, we bring a powered stair-climber for safe handling of pianos, gun safes, and heavy dressers. Tell the booking line “stair walk-up only” when you call and we will dispatch a 3-mover crew instead of 2 to keep the move inside the originally quoted hours.
Donation pickup, family-coordinator access, Veterans Affairs receipts, and the estate-cleanout workflow
The hardest part of a senior move usually isn’t the lift — it’s the coordination. Family in three time zones, a Veterans Affairs claim that needs specific receipts, donation pickup the same day as the load. Here’s exactly how we handle each, plus how the optional estate-cleanout coordination layer works.
3 questions families ask after the first walkthrough
Can you arrange the donation pickup the same day as the load, and does that cost extra?
Yes, this is part of the senior-move workflow at no surcharge. Once we walk the home with the family or downsizing coordinator, we tag items in three batches: load-and-go (going to the new residence), donate (Helping with Furniture, the Salvation Army on Bank, or Matthew House depending on what’s accepted that week), and dispose (junk truck, billed at the standard junk-removal tier — usually quarter or half-truck). On move day the donation truck stages at the curb behind the moving truck, items are loaded directly, and the family gets a tax-receipt-eligible donation slip the same week from the receiving charity. No double-handling, no second appointment.
How does family-member access work during the move when adult children live out of province?
We run a dedicated SMS thread per move with up to four family contacts on it — typically the senior, the local adult child, the out-of-province coordinator, and a property manager or care-home contact. The thread carries: arrival window confirmation, a photo log every 90 minutes during the load, a flag-and-photo whenever the crew finds something the family needs to decide on (a sealed box of papers, a pet item, an unlabelled valuable), and the final unload checklist. Out-of-province family stay in the loop without phone tag. We can also screen-share a 10-minute video walkthrough of the new unit at the end of the move on request.
For Veterans Affairs Canada relocation reimbursement, what receipt format do you provide?
We’re not a VAC-approved vendor in the formal contracted sense, but most VAC claims for senior moves use the standard relocation expense category and our receipts have always been accepted. The invoice we issue itemizes: hourly labour with crew size, distance and travel time, packing materials by line item, COI fee if required by the destination residence, and a separate line for any disposal or donation handling. We also issue a Service Description PDF you can attach to the claim that explains the senior-specific care components (extra time for sorting, family coordination, retirement-residence move-in protocol). We can’t speak to whether VAC will approve any specific claim — that depends on your case manager — but the receipt format has cleared past claims for our customers without follow-up.
Estate cleanout coordination — when the senior move is the second-last step
For the increasingly common case where the senior is moving to assisted living and the family needs the existing home cleared and ready to list within 30-60 days, we offer a dedicated coordinator role. One contact at our office quarterbacks: the move itself, the donation routing, the junk pull, the appraiser referral for items going to auction, the local-charity drop-off, the carpet-cleaning and minor patch-and-paint contractors, and the final realtor-walkthrough handoff. Pricing is hourly for the coordinator (separately from the move crew rate). Most full estates run 12-30 coordinator hours over a 4-6 week window. Common partner referrals: Alivio Downsizing, Caring Transitions Ottawa, and the Royal LePage senior-specialist agents we work with regularly.
“Mom moved from a Glebe semi to Park Place after 38 years. The crew did the load, but the part we couldn’t have managed from Calgary was the donation pickup, the VA receipt formatting for my brother’s claim, and the photo updates every two hours. The family-thread alone made the day liveable for everyone.”

We also handle long-distance moves from Ottawa across Canada — popular routes include Ottawa to Toronto, Ottawa to Montreal, and Ottawa to Halifax. For local Ottawa moves, see our Ottawa movers hub, Ottawa storage, and packing services.
