Moving from Ontario to Alberta: Checklist, Paperwork and Timeline (2026)

Updated September 2026. An Ontario-to-Alberta move is two projects at once: a 3,500-kilometre haul, and a change of province that resets your driver’s licence, vehicle registration, health coverage and taxes on a 90-day clock. This guide is written by an Ottawa moving company that runs the corridor; it covers the paperwork in the order it comes due, what actually changes when you land, and how the move itself is quoted and scheduled.

Before you leave Ontario

• Give notice and book the truck six to eight weeks out if you are moving between May and September, or around the end of any month. Long-distance trucks on the Alberta corridor book up earlier than local crews do.

• Get the inventory done. A virtual walkthrough or in-home visit is what turns a range into a binding written price. A quote given without one is an estimate.

• Cancel or transfer utilities for the day after your move-out, not the day of, so the crew has lights and the elevator works.
• Vehicle: if you are driving out, book a service before the trip; if the car is going on the truck or a carrier, arrange it separately, since household movers generally do not carry vehicles inside the van.

The 90-day paperwork clock in Alberta

Alberta gives new residents 90 days to switch the documents below. Do them in this order, because each one depends on the last.

1. Proof of Alberta address. A lease, purchase agreement or utility bill in your name. Everything else needs it.
2. Alberta driver’s licence. Exchange your Ontario licence at any Alberta registry agent within 90 days of becoming a resident. Bring the Ontario licence, proof of address and identity documents; your Ontario licence is surrendered.
3. Alberta vehicle registration and insurance. Register within 90 days. You will need Alberta insurance in place first, and vehicles registered elsewhere usually need an Alberta out-of-province vehicle inspection before plates are issued. Budget a few hundred dollars and an appointment for the inspection.
4. Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP). Register within three months of arriving. Ontario continues to cover you for up to three months after you leave, so a prompt registration means no gap; keep your OHIP card until your Alberta card arrives.
5. Schools. Alberta has public, separate (Catholic) and francophone boards; registration needs proof of address and your child’s Ontario records. Do this before the move if you are arriving mid-year.

What actually changes

• Sales tax. Alberta has no provincial sales tax; you pay the 5% GST only, against Ontario’s 13% HST.
• Land transfer tax. Alberta does not charge a land transfer tax on home purchases; it charges registration fees instead. Ontario buyers pay land transfer tax, so a purchase in Alberta closes cheaper than the same price would in Ontario.
• Renting. Alberta does not cap annual rent increases the way Ontario’s guideline does, and its tenancy rules and notice periods are different. Read the lease.
• Auto insurance is private in both provinces, but rates and requirements differ; get Alberta quotes before you register.
• Income tax is filed for the province you live in on December 31, so the year you move you file as an Alberta resident.
• Climate. Calgary and Edmonton winters are colder and drier than Ottawa’s, with more sunshine and far less freezing rain; Calgary gets chinooks, Edmonton does not. Summer moving season is the same May-to-September peak.

A six-week timeline

• Week 6: quotes with inventory; choose dedicated or consolidated; book the date; give notice.

• Week 4: Canada Post forwarding; CRA, bank, insurers, employer notified; utilities scheduled at both ends.
