Moving from Ontario to Alberta: Checklist, Paperwork and Timeline (2026)

Updated October 2026. An Ontario-to-Alberta move is two projects at once: a cross-country haul, and a change of province that puts your driver’s licence and vehicle registration on a 90-day clock, gives you three months to apply for health coverage, and changes how you are taxed. This guide is written by Men In Trucks Moving, an Ottawa moving company since 2010. Before you leave Ontario

• Give notice and book the truck six to eight weeks out if you are moving between May and September, or around the end of any month. Those are the busiest moving periods, so the earlier you ask, the more dates you have to choose from.
• Ask how your shipment will travel. Ask every mover you compare whether your household travels on its own or shares space with other shipments, who handles it along the way, and whether delivery is a set date or a window. The answers shape both the price and the timing; see what a long-distance move from Ottawa costs. The Government of Canada’s moving advice says to get the costs, terms and delivery-date commitments in writing before you commit.
• Get the inventory done. A complete inventory, with both addresses and your delivery window, is what turns a rough range into a written flat-rate quote. A price given without one is only an estimate.
• Set up Canada Post mail forwarding and update the CRA, your bank, insurers and employer. Our change-of-address checklist lists every Ontario organisation that needs to know, with links to the forms.
• Cancel or transfer utilities for the day after your move-out, not the day of, so the crew has lights and the elevator works.
• Vehicle: if you are driving out, book a service before the trip; if the car is going on the truck or a carrier, arrange it separately, since household movers generally do not carry vehicles inside the van.

The 90-day paperwork clock in Alberta

Alberta gives new residents 90 days to exchange a driver’s licence and register a vehicle, and three months to apply for health coverage. Do the steps below in this order, because each one depends on the last. Alberta’s guide to moving to Alberta from within Canada is the official starting point. Registry agents handle licences and vehicle registration, and many also take health-card applications. Official pages linked in this guide were checked on October 13, 2026.

1. Proof of Alberta address. A lease, purchase agreement or utility bill in your name. Everything else needs it.
2. Alberta driver’s licence. Exchange your Ontario licence at any Alberta registry agent within 90 days of becoming a resident. Bring the Ontario licence, proof of address and identity documents; your Ontario licence is surrendered. Alberta says a standard car or motorcycle licence from another province is exchanged for the equal Alberta class with no knowledge or road test; if you have held it for less than two years you may be placed in the graduated licensing program. Commercial truck (Class 1) licences follow separate rules. Details: exchange a licence from outside Alberta.
3. Alberta vehicle registration and insurance. Register within 90 days. You will need Alberta insurance in place first, and vehicles registered elsewhere usually need an Alberta out-of-province vehicle inspection before plates are issued. Inspection facilities set and post their own prices, so compare two or three before you book. Alberta’s vehicle inspection page has the facility search.
4. Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP). Apply for AHCIP coverage within three months of establishing residency; there is no charge to apply. Alberta says coverage begins on the first day of the third month after you establish residency (its example: residency on July 12, coverage from October 1) and that you can keep using your previous province’s card while you wait. Ontario says OHIP covers a permanent move until the last day of the second full month after you leave, but not ambulance services or prescriptions outside a hospital. Keep your OHIP card until your Alberta card arrives and consider private insurance for what OHIP does not cover.
5. Schools. Alberta’s education options include public, separate (Catholic) and francophone schools, as well as charter, independent, home and online learning. Ask the school or school authority you choose what it needs to register your child, and have proof of address and your child’s Ontario report cards ready. Start before the move if you are arriving mid-year.

Registering an Ontario vehicle in Alberta

Alberta requires a vehicle bought elsewhere in Canada to pass an out-of-province vehicle inspection before it can be registered. The province’s inspection page sets out four steps:

1. Buy a Request for Vehicle Inspection form at any Alberta registry agent.
2. Take the vehicle and the form to an inspection facility of your choice. Alberta says an inspection takes up to two hours on average, depending on the vehicle.
3. If the vehicle fails, complete the repairs within 10 days of the inspection; after that, a new full inspection is required.
4. Present the inspection certificate to a registry agent within 14 days of the inspection, or it will not be accepted.

To register the vehicle, bring proof of ownership, proof of valid insurance that names you, and identification. Alberta’s exemption for vehicles from British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba does not cover Ontario. A new vehicle bought or leased from a dealer within the last 90 days may be exempt, so ask the registry agent before you pay for an inspection.

What actually changes

• Sales tax. Alberta has no provincial sales tax; you pay the 5% GST only, against Ontario’s 13% HST.
• Utilities. In Alberta you choose who sells you electricity and natural gas. The province says a company offering the regulated rate option can set up an account immediately, while a competitive company can take 10 to 90 days, so arrange power and gas before you get the keys. Alberta points newcomers to its Utilities Consumer Advocate for the details. Rent may not include utilities, so check before you sign.
• Land transfer tax. Alberta does not charge a land transfer tax on home purchases; it charges land title registration fees and a levy based on the property value and the mortgage amount instead. Ontario buyers pay land transfer tax. Ask your lawyer for both closing-cost figures before you compare prices.
• Renting. Alberta does not cap annual rent increases the way Ontario’s guideline does, and its tenancy rules and notice periods are different. Read the lease. Alberta’s tenancy rules set no limit on the amount of an increase, but a landlord must wait at least a year between increases and give three full tenancy months of written notice on a monthly tenancy. Ontario’s rent increase guideline is 1.9% for 2027 and does not apply to most units first occupied after November 15, 2018.
• Auto insurance is private in both provinces, but rates and requirements differ; get Alberta quotes before you register. Alberta requires basic coverage by law, and says its automobile insurance system starts moving to a Care-First model on January 1, 2027, so ask your insurer how a policy that runs past that date is handled.
• Income tax is filed for the province you live in on December 31, so if you are living in Alberta on that date you file as an Alberta resident for that year.
• Climate. Calgary and Edmonton get less than half of Ottawa’s annual precipitation and a little over half its snowfall, and fewer than half as many days with freezing rain or drizzle. In January, Edmonton is colder than Ottawa and Calgary is milder: the mean temperature is −12.1 °C in Edmonton, −10.3 °C in Ottawa and −7.1 °C in Calgary (airport stations, Environment Canada climate normals, 1981–2010). Summer moving season is the same May-to-September peak.

The move itself: Ottawa to Alberta

Access, elevators and parking at both ends

• Buildings. Condo and apartment buildings often set their own move rules: elevator bookings, time windows, deposits or fees. Ask the property manager at each end as soon as you have dates.
• Truck parking in Ottawa. The City of Ottawa says a moving truck that follows the existing parking rules does not need a permit, while a portable storage container that uses any part of the City right-of-way does. See the City’s temporary encroachment permits page.
• Winter loading days. Between November 15 and April 1, Ottawa may declare a winter weather parking ban, so check before a winter loading day.
• The road in between. 511 Ontario and 511 Alberta post highway conditions and closures. Weather can hold up any vehicle, which is one reason delivery is quoted as a window.
• Delivery in Alberta. Confirm the elevator booking and where the truck can stop with your building or municipality before the delivery window opens, and make sure someone can be reached to meet the truck.

What goes into an Ontario-to-Alberta moving quote

• Inventory. The quote is built on what you are moving, so list everything, including the garage, shed and storage locker. What you sell or donate before the inventory is taken never goes on the quote.
• Both addresses. Floors, stairs, elevators, the walk from the truck to the door and where the truck can park, at each end.
• Dates. Your loading date, the earliest day you can accept delivery, and how flexible either one is.
• Packing. Whether you pack yourself or add our packing service for some or all rooms.
• Heavy and specialty items. List pianos, safes, gym equipment and anything that must be taken apart, so the right crew and equipment are planned.

A six-week timeline

• Week 6: quotes with inventory; ask each mover how the shipment travels and what the delivery window is; book the date; give notice.
• Week 5: Alberta insurance quotes; school registration started; declutter, because volume is the largest cost driver on a cross-country move.
• Week 4: Canada Post forwarding; CRA, bank, insurers, employer notified; utilities scheduled at both ends.
• Weeks 3–2: pack non-essentials; book the elevator if either end is a building; confirm the delivery window with the mover in writing.
• Week 1: essentials box for the first week in Alberta; documents you will need at the registry agent in your hand luggage, not on the truck.
• Loading day: check each item off the inventory as it goes on the truck and keep your copy. Carry identification for everyone in the household, proof of citizenship or status, school transcripts, medication and valuables with you.
• Delivery day: be reachable through the delivery window, check each item off as it comes off the truck, and note anything missing or damaged before you sign for the delivery.
• Arrival, days 1–90: address proof, licence, insurance, registration and inspection, AHCIP, schools.

Frequently asked questions

How long do I have to switch my Ontario licence in Alberta?

Ninety days from the date you become an Alberta resident. The same 90-day window applies to registering your vehicle.

Will I have a gap in health coverage?

It depends on your dates. Alberta says AHCIP coverage begins on the first day of the third month after you establish residency, if you apply within three months, and Ontario says OHIP covers a permanent move until the last day of the second full month after you leave. Compare the two dates for your own move; if they do not meet, ask ServiceOntario and AHCIP before you go.

Does Alberta have provincial sales tax?

No. Alberta charges only the federal 5% GST, compared with Ontario’s 13% HST.

How long does a move from Ottawa to Alberta take?

It depends on the distance, the season and how your shipment travels. Edmonton is about 3,500 km from Ottawa by road, and federal hours-of-service rules stop a commercial driver after 13 hours of driving in a day, so any cross-country move takes days rather than hours. Can the movers take my car?

Household movers generally do not carry vehicles inside the moving van. Cars travel on a vehicle carrier or are driven; ask for both to be scheduled around the same delivery date.

Do I need an inspection to register an Ontario vehicle in Alberta?

In most cases, yes. Alberta requires a vehicle bought elsewhere in Canada to pass an out-of-province vehicle inspection before it can be registered. Its exemption for vehicles from British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba does not cover Ontario. A new vehicle bought or leased from a dealer within the last 90 days may be exempt.

What is the $5,000 Alberta moving bonus, and can I still get it?

Not for a move you make now. The Alberta is Calling Moving Bonus was a $5,000 refundable tax credit for up to 2,000 eligible people who moved to Alberta between May 1 and December 31, 2024 and worked in an eligible occupation; the program was aimed at skilled trade workers. The Government of Alberta has archived the program guidelines. It was not a general grant for everyone who moves to the province.

Are the costs of an Ontario-to-Alberta move tax deductible?

Possibly. The Canada Revenue Agency lets you claim eligible moving expenses on line 21900 if you moved to work, to run a business or to study full time at a post-secondary school, and your new home is at least 40 kilometres closer to the new workplace or school. What is the cheapest way to move from Ontario to Alberta?

Move less. A long-distance quote is built from your inventory, the distance and your delivery window, and the inventory is the part you control, so sell, donate or recycle before it is taken. Then compare like with like: driving a rental truck yourself, a portable container and a full-service mover each trade money against your own time and labour.
