TLDR: Hot tub moves in Ottawa run $480–$950 for ground-level relocations and $1,100–$1,800+ when fences, decks, or stairs are involved. Crane-assisted moves (over a roof or across a high fence) are quoted on-site. Men In Trucks brings spa dollies, four-strap rigs, deck protection, and a foreman-led crew on every job — book in 2 minutes with a $100 refundable deposit. Same-week slots are limited and weekend slots fill 7–14 days out.

Hot tubs are the heaviest residential single item we move. A 6-person spa weighs 800–950 lb dry, and once you add the cabinet, cover, jets, and pump pack, it’s solidly built around a foam-insulated shell that does not tolerate being dropped on a corner. Get the move wrong and you’re looking at a cracked acrylic shell, a busted plumbing manifold, or a damaged deck where the crew tried to skid it over the boards.

Men In Trucks Moving Inc. runs a dedicated specialty crew for hot tubs, pool tables, pianos, and safes across Ottawa, Gatineau, and the National Capital Region. We’ve moved spas in and out of Kanata back yards, Barrhaven new-build patios, Manotick country properties with gravel access, Orleans walk-out basements with sliding-door entries, Westboro condos with rooftop decks, and Glebe coach-house yards reached only by a 36-inch garden gate. We’re rated 5 stars across 178+ reviews and we’ve never met a hot tub we couldn’t move — but we’ll always tell you in advance which category your move is in.

What Makes Hot Tub Moving Different

The weight is real

A standard 6-person hot tub weighs 800–950 lb dry. A swim spa or 8-person model can clear 1,400 lb. The whole load is unbalanced (the pump pack and heater are usually on one side) and the structure is rigid foam under thin acrylic — which means lift points matter. Two unprepared people don’t move a hot tub. They damage the spa, the deck, the fence, or themselves. We bring a 3–4 mover crew, two spa dollies, four ratchet straps, and deck-runner protection to every job.

Drain, prep, and refill

Every hot tub move starts with a full drain at the source — ideally 24 hours before move day so the cabinet has time to dry. We can do same-day drains in summer, but the spa moves cleaner if it’s already empty when we arrive. After the move, you’ll need to refill, prime the pump, and rebalance the chemistry. We can refer Ottawa-area spa techs we trust for the post-move refill if your dealer doesn’t include it.

Path planning is the whole job

Most hot tub moves are 80% planning, 20% lifting. We’ll need to know: width of every gate, fence, and door the spa has to pass through; presence of stairs (and which side they turn); deck height and structure; whether power lines, low branches, or roof overhangs constrain the lift; and the destination clearance (almost always the bottleneck). Send us photos when you book — we’ll flag any issues before truck day, never on it.

When You Need a Crane

Some Ottawa hot tub installations only got into the back yard because the house was unfinished. If your spa lives behind a 6-foot fence with no removable section, on a second-storey rooftop deck, or in a yard that can only be reached by going over the house, you need a crane. We coordinate crane partners across Ottawa, Gatineau, and the broader NCR — typically the truck arrives with the crane in the same window, the spa is rigged with engineered straps, and the lift takes 30–60 minutes once the crew is on-site.

Crane work needs lead time: a city of Ottawa right-of-way permit (if the crane sits in a road or sidewalk) takes 5–7 business days, and the crane company itself often books 7–14 days out in summer. If you suspect you need a crane, book your spa move with us early — we’ll handle the coordination.

Long-Distance Hot Tub Moves

Moving a hot tub from Ottawa to Toronto, Montreal, Kingston, or Gatineau? Hot tubs travel well as long as they’re properly drained, padded, and strapped flat. We run weekly long-distance routes along the Hwy 401 / Hwy 417 corridor and can include a spa in a shared load for cost-efficient pricing. See our long-distance movers Ottawa hub for transparent route quotes.

Booking Your Hot Tub Move (How It Works)

  1. Tell us about your spa — brand & model if known, capacity (4/6/8 person), approximate age, current location (deck, patio, walk-out, rooftop).
  2. Photos of the path — pickup yard, drop-off yard, every gate / fence / stair / door / overhang the spa has to clear.
  3. Drain it — ideally 24 hours before move day; we can do same-day if needed but the spa moves cleaner dry.
  4. Lock your date with $100 — fully refundable up to 48 hours before, and applied to your final invoice on move day.
  5. We confirm 24 hours ahead — text and email with the foreman’s name, ETA window, and any final pre-move instructions (e.g. fence section removal).
  6. Move day — site walk-through, lift, transport, place at destination, level the spa pad if needed, and final inspection.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to move a hot tub in Ottawa?

Ground-level moves with minimal stairs start at $480. Stair / deck / fence-removal moves start at $750. Crane-assisted and long-distance moves start at $1,400 and are quoted on-site after a path survey. See our full moving cost guide for hourly rates and add-ons.

Do I need to drain the hot tub before you arrive?

Ideally, yes — 24 hours before move day. The spa is lighter, won’t slosh, and the cabinet has time to dry. We can do same-day drains in summer for an additional fee, but the move runs cleaner if you’ve already drained it.

Do you remove and reinstall fences for the move?

If a fence panel needs to come out to clear the spa, we coordinate with the customer or a fence pro to remove and reinstall the section. We don’t replace fence panels ourselves, but we’ll plan the move around the access window the panel removal creates.

Can you move a hot tub over a roof or onto a rooftop deck?

Yes — with a crane. Crane-assisted spa moves need 7–14 days of lead time (longer if a road permit is required). We coordinate the crane partner, the permit pull, and the lift timing on your behalf. Pricing is project-based and we always quote on-site after a path survey.

Are you insured for spa damage?

Yes. Every move is covered under cargo and commercial liability insurance. For premium spas (over $15K) we recommend an appraisal-based supplemental binder; we’ll point you to brokers we trust.

How far in advance should I book?

Weekday slots usually open with 5–7 days of notice. Saturdays in May–September fill 10–14 days out. Crane-assisted moves should be booked 14+ days ahead so we have time to coordinate the crane and pull any permits. Same-day slots exist but are very limited.

Can you store the hot tub between moves?

Yes. We have access to climate-aware Ottawa storage and can hold a drained, covered spa for days, weeks, or months between move-out and move-in. Storage is billed monthly with no long commitment — see our moving + storage page for combined-service pricing.

Do you also dispose of old hot tubs?

Yes. We run an Ottawa-wide junk removal service and regularly remove old, broken, or unwanted hot tubs for recycling and disposal. Pricing is project-based depending on size and accessibility — book it as a separate service or bundle it with a relocation.
