First we measure — doorways, landings, ceiling heights, elevator cabs. Plenty of “impossible” pieces make it inside with legs off, doors removed from hinges, and an experienced angle. Hoisting is what happens when the math truly says no.
How a hoist works
Two crew members rig and control the piece from above with rated straps; one or two guide from below. The piece is fully blanket-wrapped and strapped before it leaves the ground, balcony rails and window frames are padded, and the lift path is kept clear. Most residential hoists are second- or third-floor balcony lifts and take under an hour on site. We assess every hoist in advance — photos of the piece and the balcony or window are usually enough — and if a piece is beyond safe manual rigging, we say so and help plan the crane or disassembly alternative instead.

Can you tell in advance whether my sofa needs a hoist?
Usually yes — measurements of the piece plus photos of the staircase or landing settle it. We’d rather plan a hoist than discover one at 2 p.m. on moving day.
Is hoisting safe for the furniture?
That’s the point of it. The piece is wrapped, strapped, and controlled from above and below the whole way — far gentler than forcing it around a landing it doesn’t fit.
How high can you hoist by hand?
Manual rigging is typically a second- or third-floor job. Above that, or for extreme weights, we’ll tell you honestly and help arrange the right equipment.
Do you hoist items both up and down?
Both — getting a sofa out of a walk-up you’re leaving is as common as getting one into the home you’re arriving at.
Can hoisting be part of a full move, or is it a separate visit?
Either. It’s most efficient as part of the move day, but we also do standalone hoists — including for furniture bought online that showed up bigger than the staircase.
